NASA - Triumph and Tragedy ep01 One Small Step

NFO:
Wed 24 Jun 2009 21:00 BBC Two

In 2009, NASA celebrates the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing. This documentary
series offers audiences a unique chance to glimpse an astronaut's view of space flight. It
is an epic story of heroes and their breathtaking successes as they further humanity's
innate desire to explore.

To land a human being on another celestial body is the first step to living beyond our
planet. The breathless pace and daring of the Apollo program sees NASA master previously
unimagined tasks in an attempt to achieve the most incredible accomplishment in the
history of human endeavour.

From the ashes of tragedy on Apollo 1 emerges a determination that puts Apollo 8 in orbit
around the moon ahead of schedule. Apollo 9 and 10 each break bold new ground and pave the
way for something few dared to believe was possible. When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin
walk on the moon and return safely to earth, the whole planet throws them a party.

James May on the Moon

NFO:
Sun 21 Jun 2009 21:05 BBC Two

Forty years since those first "small steps" were taken on the Moon, BBC Two and BBC Four
take a voyage "out of this world" with a season of programming to celebrate this momentous
historical event. As the season's centrepiece, Top Gear's James May makes his own,
personal mission to travel to the ends of Earth in two one-off documentaries on BBC Two
and BBC Four.

Throughout the rest of the month, BBC Two and BBC Four celebrate the auspicious events of
20 July 1969 with programmes featuring in-depth interviews and insights from the people
who were there at the time, together with amazing, restored archive footage.

The Season kicks off as James May takes a "giant leap" into space history to discover the
stories of the heroes behind this historical event.

James fulfils the childhood dream he has fantasised about experiencing since watching the
Apollo landings from his family sitting room, when he flies to the edge of space. To get a
taste of how it felt to be an Apollo astronaut, James experiences zero gravity on the
infamous "Vomit Comet". He also endures the bone-crushing gravitational forces of a
simulated launch in the massive Saturn V rocket, from an Air Force centrifuge chamber.

James's most memorable experience is a rare and privileged flight 70,000 feet above Earth
in a U-2 spy plane. Wearing a full space suit, James looks down onto the curvature of
Earth and up into the blackness of space from the comfort of his cockpit. It is an
experience which finally helps him understand how the Apollo astronauts felt as they
looked back at Earth from the surface of the Moon.

To add to his experience, James also visits some of the veterans of the space race. He
meets Apollo 16's Charlie Duke, who gives James his verdict on the road-handling of the
Lunar Rover; Alan Bean, who takes him for a spin in his 1969 Corvette, which also happens
to be one of three matching cars driven by the Apollo 12 crew; and Apollo 17's Harrison
Schmitt – one of the last men to visit the Moon – gives James a guided tour of a Saturn V
rocket.

Viewers can switch straight over to BBC Four after this programme to join James May on his
rare and privileged flight, 70,000 feet above Earth, in James May At The Edge Of Space.

James May At The Edge Of Space

NFO:
Sunday 21 June
10.00-10.30pm BBC FOUR

Straight after BBC Two's James May On The Moon, viewers can switch to BBC Four to follow
him on his rare and privileged flight 70,000 feet above Earth, as the BBC's season of
programmes celebrating 40 years since the first moon landings continues.

James's destination is a place known in the Air Force as the "space equivalent zone" or
the "edge of space". His mode of transport is none other than the U-2 spy plane – a relic
from the Cold War which is still capable of flying higher than any other aeroplane.

In order for James to take this flight, he must first prove that he is physically capable
of surviving the journey. For three days he endures gruelling training as he learns how to
eject from his cockpit in case of emergency and how to survive the 13-mile fall back to
Earth. Most importantly, he must learn how to wear a $250,000 space suit and use it to
stay alive in air so thin it can kill in an instant.

The US Air Force Base in California is the training ground and Major "Cabi" Cabigas – one
of the Air Force's most experienced U-2 pilots – is James's mentor and pilot for the trip.
On completion, James stands to experience the flight of a lifetime, flying as high as
anyone can without becoming an astronaut. Fully trained and cocooned in his spacesuit,
James takes this momentous flight high enough to look down on the curvature of Earth and
look up into the black infinity of space.

Million Dollar Traders - Series 1

NFO:
Million Dollar Traders - Part 1
BBC2 - 12 January 2009

1/3 - Make Me a Trader

This series involves eight novices of various ages and backgrounds who are trained up as traders and given real money to invest. As luck would have it, the show was filmed last summer during the most volatile stock-market activity in years, so for the newcomers it's like taking their first sailing lesson on the day of a hurricane. The programme gets across the psychological pressures of the job brilliantly. "The biggest battle is with your own mind," reflects Emil, a Toxteth fight promoter who takes to trading like a duck to (stormy) water. Amid the talk of "pairs trades" and "shorting on the open", there's the strong sense that share-juggling with other people's money is dramatically harder and more stressful than you might imagine.

Million Dollar Traders - Part 2
BBC2 - 19 January 2009

2/3 - Profit and Loss

Eight ordinary people are given a million dollars, a fortnight of intensive training and two months to run their own hedge fund. Can they make a killing?

The experiment reveals the inner workings of a City trading floor. The money is supplied by hedge fund manager Lex van Dam: he wants to see if ordinary people can beat the professionals, and he expects a return on his investment too. Yet no-one foresees the financial crisis that lies ahead.

The traders were selected in spring 2008, before the US credit crisis gathered pace. The successful candidates were chosen, trained and dispatched to their specially created trading room in the heart of the Square Mile. Among them are an environmentalist, a soldier, a boxing promoter, an entrepreneur, a retired IT consultant, a vet, a student and a shopkeeper.

The eight novice city traders struggle to ride the storm as stock markets around the world go haywire. Some of them take big risks, and others lose their nerve in spectacular fashion.

Manet: The Man Who Invented Modern Art

NFO:
Documentary
Manet: The Man Who Invented Modern Art
BBC2 21:40 - 23:10 90Min
13th June 2009

Manet is one of the main candidates for the title of the most important artist there has been. As the reluctant father of Impressionism, and the painter of Dejeuner sur l'herbe, he can probably be accused of inventing modern art. But his story is fascinating on many other levels.

As a piece of compelling biography, Manet's is the unlikely tale of the stubborn son of the most highly placed judge in France who decides to become an artist and embarrass his father. The resulting family tensions are the stuff of legend. His mother, by the way, was from a family that still supplies Sweden with its royalty.

Then there was Manet's dramatic private life, including exotic romantic affairs and a particularly horrible death when, riddled with syphilis and gangrene, Manet had to have his leg amputated.

But none of this would matter a jot were it not for the revolutionary art it provoked and coloured. Always cited as the father of the Impressionists, Manet stubbornly refused to show with them, and was careful to maintain an aesthetic distance from Monet, Renoir and the others. While they worshipped him, he looked down on them, preferring to continue his own remarkable departure from the traditional ways of art. The scandalous paintings with which he made his reputation - the outrageously sexy Olympia; the relentlessly paraphrased Dejeuner sur l'herbe - are the most totemic images in French 19th-century art. And the story of how Manet was rejected from the official salon, and ended up instigating the Salon des Refuses, can be understood as the epoch's key cultural event.

Using the life of Manet as his narrative arch, Waldemar Januszczak tells the story of a complex and difficult man who started a revolution that continues to rumble on today.

How did Stone Age people reach North and South America? Dr Alice Roberts discovers evidence for an ancient corridor through the Canadian ice sheet that may have allowed those first people through. But some very ancient finds in southern Chile seem to suggest a very different way into the Americas; an ancient human skull discovered in Brazil even points to an Australasian origin of the Americans. Could a route from Australia across the Pacific have been possible?

China's Capitalist Revolution

NFO:
China's Capitalist Revolution
Sat 20 Jun 2009 19:30 BBC Two

When Chairman Mao died in 1976, he left China in chaos and poverty. He was succeeded by
Deng Xiaoping, who overturned Maoism and taught the Chinese to love capitalism, creating
special investment zones for the West. But Deng's crash course in capitalism went wrong
when inflation grew and workers lost jobs.

By 1989, China faced disaster. Now, 20 years after the tragic events in Tiananmen Square
in Beijing, this programme reveals an interpretation of the motives of the demonstrators
that may well overturn the conventional view in the West.

The demonstrators did not begin by demanding democracy. Corruption, inflation and the
hardship caused by economic reforms drove students and workers to confront the government
and the army. Students went on hunger strike, and troops killed more than 2,000.

Deng Xiaoping gave the order to fire, but his ideas prevailed. This film argues that
Deng's capitalist revolution created today's China.

4/5 - Australia

It's one thing trekking from Africa to Europe, but how on earth did our ancestors make the long and dangerous journey to Australia? And when did we arrive Down Under? Frustratingly, these ancient travellers left behind precious few artefacts (and not a hint of a prehistoric raft), so dating their movements is tricky. But plucky Dr Alice Roberts isn't put off. She endures blistering heat, an annoying number of flies and a precarious water crossing to find out. Much of what she finds is inconclusive, although DNA samples and a clever computer program that shows climate changes going back 70,000 years throw up revealing information. And, however unlikely it seems, she's now convinced that Aboriginal Australians, just like her, are descendants of that first group of humans in Africa.

The Designed World

NFO:
Fri 5 Jun 2009 04:00 BBC Two

An insight into the world of design through 12 stories, shot across a range of countries,
ranging from product design to world class feats of engineering and design projects which
have a social impact.

A motorcycle designer is many peoples idea of a dream job but, as Triumph's Simon
Warburton reveals here, it is not always an easy one. We are taken behind the scenes to
look at the design processes of two very different motorbikes. The Bonneville T 100 is a
re-creation of a classic model whilst the Daytona 675 is a brand new cutting edge sports
bike.

Hazelwood School was designed by two architects who had never before designed a school.
This was not a mainstream school but a school for people aged 2 to 19 years with sensory
impairments. The architects talk us through their responsibilities as designers, how they
approached this project and what the key design decisions were along the way. Monica
McGeever, head teacher of Hazelwood School, offers an insight into the needs of the
children at the school and how the final design addressed those needs.

How the Celts Saved Britain
BBC4 - 25 May 2009

1/2 - A New Civilization

Dan Snow blows the lid on the traditional, Anglo-centric view of history and reveals how the Irish saved Britain from cultural oblivion during the Dark Ages, in this provocative, two-part documentary.

Travelling back in time to some of the remotest corners of the British Isles, Dan unravels the mystery of the lost years of 400-800 AD, when the collapse of the Roman Empire left Britain in tatters.

In the first episode, Dan shows how in the 5th century AD Roman 'Britannia' was plunged into chaos by the arrival of Anglo-Saxon invaders. As Roman civilisation disappeared from Britain, a new civilisation emerged in one of the most unlikely places - Ireland. Within a few generations, Christianity transformed a backward, barbarian country into the cultural powerhouse of early medieval Europe.

This is a visually stunning and intellectually stimulating journey into one of the least known chapters of British history.

Empire of Cricket - Part 1

NFO:
Empire of Cricket
BBC2 - 31 May 2009

1/4 - England

The first episode of Empire of Cricket tells the story of the game in the country of its birth, England.

The English invented cricket, created its rules and a whole moral code for the game. They then exported this elegant game of bat and ball to the wider British Empire. But England began to struggle when the natives began to play the game so much better.

The English game was also divided by class and held back by its own traditions. Until the 1960s, cricket was literally divided between upper class gentlemen, the amateurs and lower class players, the professionals. Even the way players addressed the ball had class connotations, with exuberant off-side shots being presented in training manuals as somehow having greater value than more workmanlike leg-side scoring.

In telling the story of cricket in England, Empire of Cricket explores the careers of great cricketers from Grace to Hobbs, Hutton to Illingworth, Botham to Pietersen. It also shows how cricket in England has been influenced by historical and cultural factors that have shaped the game we know today.

Includes interviews with cricketers Tom Graveney, Ray Illingworth, Trevor Bailey, Brian Close, David Gower, Bob Willis, Graham Gooch, Nasser Hussain, Michael Vaughan and Kevin Pietersen.

True Stories - Painting The Mind

NFO:
Tuesday, 26th May 2009
10pm to 11:10pm
More4

The strand, which showcases the best of international feature documentaries, makes a much appreciated return to a UK production with Sarah Feltes's film which looks at the untapped artistic resources of the human brain.

In Painting the Mind we met two men who share an obsession: neither of them can stop making art. This is not because they are driven or ambitious, but because they're brain damaged. Tommy McHugh is a Scouse builder with a criminal past, then one morning he was poleaxed by two strokes. Jon Sarkin, a chiropractor from Massachusetts, suffered with a noise like a fire alarm going off between his ears for a year, until an operation to put it right caused a stroke, necessitating the removal of half his cerebellum.

Both were confused, impaired and depressed. But they also became "disinhibited" and seized by a compulsion to draw. McHugh could only do stick men at first, but his work eventually became quite accomplished. Sarkin is now a professional artist, with a dealer and everything.

What made this programme so fascinating was not just the questions it raised about where the creative impulse lies, but the way it illuminated the very purpose of art, especially the needs it satisfies in the artist. Sarkin is clear about why he does it: "My art is an agreement between my compulsions and obsessions and I."

Europe. Episode 3.
Dr Alice Roberts travels the globe to discover the incredible story of how humans left Africa to colonise the world. When our species first arrived in Europe, the peak of the Ice Age was approaching and the continent was already crawling with a rival: stronger, at home in the cold and even, contrary to their popular image, brainier than us. So how did the European pioneers survive first the Neanderthals and then the deep freeze as they pushed across the continent?
