Nobel prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney, actor Julian Glover, local historians and
enthusiasts, he brings the story and language of this iconic poem to life.

10 Things You Need to Know About Losing Weight

NFO:
10 Things You Need to Know About Losing Weight.WnA
Wed 27 May 2009 20:00 BBC One

Every year millions of people in Britain try to lose weight, and most fail. We are
constantly bombarded with advice about dieting and the latest slimming fads. But what
really works? In this programme, medical journalist Michael Mosley investigates the
latest scientific breakthroughs in slimming, uncovering ten of the simplest ways you can
shed those pounds. From the slimming secrets of soup to our brain's response after
skipping meals, what he discovers may completely change the way you think about diets,
health and losing weight.

Michael does not look like he is at all overweight, but while making this film he
discovered that he, like millions of others, has internal body fat around his kidneys
and liver that he really needs to lose. So he tries out the scientific tips himself, and
by the end of the film he succeeds in losing the weight he wants.

Plus, musician Alex James, who is a passionate cheese maker, tries out an intriguing
scientific discovery - that low-fat dairy products can help you excrete more fat from
all your food.

Radio presenter Amy Lame learns how just a few small changes in her daily routine can
help burn significantly more calories, which is handy for those who hate exercise and
the gym.

And actress Debbie Chazen, who eats healthy foods, has her metabolism checked and keeps
a food diary - with some surprising results.

We discover the scientific reasons why soup keeps you feeling fuller for longer than
solid food: it's all to do with the particular way the stomach shrinks and expands, and
we'll prove it using ultrasound scans of Territorial Army recruits.

Full of practical tips and scientific insights, we discover how anyone can lose weight
more easily.

Feasts ep02

NFO:
Feasts ep02 Japan.WnA
Wed 27 May 2009 21:00 BBC Two

Series in which food writer and presenter Stefan Gates immerses himself in some of the
most extraordinary feasts and festivals on earth. By joining ordinary people in these
strange and wonderful distillations of their culture and beliefs, he hopes to gain a
revelatory insight into how the world thinks and feels.

Stefan attempts to get under the skin of the traditional Japanese reserve by joining in
some amazing feasts and festivals, a journey which culminates with Stefan and 10,000
Japanese men wearing nothing but loin cloths in a drunken rampage at a sacred Shinto
temple.

He starts his trip by helping a Shinto priestess carry a six-foot wooden penis around a
suburb of Tokyo, as she bemoans how kids today seem to have lost their traditional
Japanese reserve, before joining the Baby Sumo festival where parents compete to get
their children to cry first, to give them good luck for the rest of their lives.

Finally, he embarks on the most extraordinary event of his life - the Naked Man
festival. He meets up with Mr Kosaki, a man from the classic Japanese mould who has
never told his wife he loves her, who has forsaken his love of music to become a
salaryman, and whose work consumes his life. He is as different from Stefan as anyone
could hope to be, until his friends arrive and everything changes.

They get wildly drunk, practically naked, and stuff themselves with sushi. Then those
still standing head off on a terrifying, barrier-wrecking festival that finally allows
the Japanese man to reveal himself as passionate, expressive and loving as anyone. It is
all rooted in centuries of Shinto food-related tradition, but is really a huge primal
scream from men who spend their days unable to express themselves.

strange and wonderful distillations of their culture and beliefs, he hopes to gain a
revelatory insight into how the world thinks and feels.

Stefan makes a journey across India to discover how feasts and celebration divide - and
bring together - a turbulent nation that can be riven by religious tension and extremes
of wealth.

He is shocked to see how much extravagance and social engineering there is in an
expensive showpiece Rajasthani Hindu wedding, yet how little emotion is actually
expressed. These events are spectacular, and the scale is terrifying for a father of
two young daughters.

In Kerala, Stefan experiences the bewildering festival of Onam, a Hindu celebration
that brings this massive state of millions of people together, Hindu and Christian,
rich and poor alike. Over several days he joins almost all of the entire 32m population
in sitting down to exactly the same meal - an 11-portion feast eaten with fingers from
a banana leaf.

Stefan joins in the Pulikali, the tiger dance, and is apparently he first westerner
ever to take part. It is the most physically uncomfortable, gruesome day of his life.
He has his body hair shaved off with a dry razor, then spends five hours being painted
with several layers of household gloss paint, holding on to two sticks to keep his arms
outstretched as he dries out. He is then covered in a sweaty, sticky mask and a pair of
bordello pants, and packed off into the streets to join his team in dancing like a
maniac around the baking-hot streets of the city of Thrissur for four hours.

Anatomist Dr Alice Roberts follows in the chilly footsteps of our ancestors who left Africa 70,000 years ago for Siberia, one of the coldest places on Earth. Not that they knew that's where they were going at the time. And judging by the harsh lifestyle of the contemporary Siberian nomads she visits, they'd have turned back if they knew what lay in store. But what puzzles Roberts most is why - if we really did all descend from just one small band of homo sapiens - do the world's populations all look so different from one another? The Chinese have a controversial theory that they don't share our ancestry but, although she listens politely, she's not convinced. But then neither is the team of Chinese geneticists she subsequently meets.

Mud, Sweat and Tractors: The Story of Agriculture - Fruit and Veg

Wednesday, 22nd April 2009
9pm to 10pm
BBC4

Part 2 of 4

A look at the changes in the way fruit and veg was grown, picked and sold, told through three of the staples in the British landscape - apples, strawberries and tomatoes.

Home movies and archive footage reveal the extent of revolution in how the fruit was picked and the impact supermarkets had on the fortunes of the small and medium-sized growers. It tells a story of personal, commercial and quality disaster as the number of small scale growers has been squeezed to virtually nil over the years. And how the fruit and veg that we now consume is primarily geared towards a uniformity of appearance and long shelf life, and bugger the taste of the thing.

Art of War

NFO:
Sun Tzu was the Nostradamus of warfare, and his book Art of War, written 2,400 years ago, is still the ultimate how-to book for winning. This two-hour special brings his words to life. Shot like a graphic novel, it weaves together several epic stories, including the story of Sun Tzu himself, and a war soon after his death where a city is saved using his tactics as China takes the first step toward unification. We'll also follow other epic battles in history--Roman battles, The Civil War, WWII, and present day--that illustrate more of Sun Tzu's lessons, to detail how the people who understand his strategy are the most dangerous weapons of all. And while his ideals were originally created for battle, his lessons could be used by anyone who wants to win--whether at sports, business, or life.

Horizon - How Violent Are You

NFO:
Horizon - How Violent Are You.WnA
Tue 12 May 2009 21:00 on BBC Two

Michael Portillo investigates what makes ordinary people commit extreme acts of
violence, in the final Horizon of the series, and explores the fine line between
control and aggression.

Michael looks at the environmental and psychological factors that can cause an
individual to snap and to lose their self-control. He explores a much darker side of
people's nature and asks if anyone can be driven to deliberately kill. In a
thought-provoking and sometimes uncomfortable journey, Michael discovers that each of
us could be inherently more violent than we think.

Michael learns what it's like to inflict pain as he takes part in the Tinku, an annual
violence ritual in the Bolivian Andes. To find out if violence is addictive he meets an
ex-football hooligan, who lived for his Saturday fights, and a former child soldier
from war-torn Sudan, who tells a harrowing story of brainwashing, torture and regret.

In a personal challenge, Michael is pushed to his limits in an extreme
sleep-deprivation test that pits him against two crying babies. After 36 hours without
sleep, he spends a pressurised day working in a professional kitchen as Professor Jane
Ireland tries to find out if Michael's passive personality can be broken down to
unearth a violent core.

Most surprisingly of all, he meets with Professor Peter Smith to observe one of the
most violent groups in society, a group biologically incapable of controlling their
aggressive instincts – ordinary three-year-olds. Michael learns how socialisation and
learned experiences change the make-up of the brain and help us to control our
behaviour as we age.

But what does it take for ordinary people to inflict pain in everyday situations? In a
fascinating psychological study, Michael watches a replication of one of the most
controversial studies in history, the Milgram study. Will participants be willing to
administer a seemingly lethal electric shock to someone they think is an innocent
bystander?

The Incredible Human Journey ep01

The Incredible Human Journey ep01 Out of Africa.WnA
Sun 10 May 2009 21:30 on BBC Two

Dr Alice Roberts travels the globe to discover the incredible story of how humans left
Africa to colonise the world - overcoming hostile terrain, extreme weather and other
species of human. She pieces together precious fragments of bone, stone and new DNA
evidence and discovers how this journey changed these African ancestors into the people
of today.

Alice travels to Africa in search of the birthplace of the first people. They were so
few in number and so vulnerable that today they would probably be considered an
endangered species. So what allowed them to survive at all? The Bushmen of the Kalahari
have some answers - the unique design of the human body made them efficient hunters and
the ancient click language of the Bushmen points to an early ability to organise and
plan.

Humans survived there, but Africa was to all intents and purposes a sealed continent.
So how and by what route did humans make it out of Africa? Astonishing genetic evidence
reveals that everyone alive today who is not African descends from just one successful,
tiny group which left the continent in a single crossing, an event that may have
happened around 70 thousand years ago. But how did they do it? Alice goes searching for
clues in the remote Arabian Desert.

Thu 7 May 2009 21:00 on BBC Four

Nation on Film documentary telling the story of youth hostelling, which was founded in 1909
in Germany and was established in Britain in 1930, through fascinating archive film
discovered in a storeroom at the Youth Hostel Association headquarters in Derbyshire.

These films chart the progress of the movement, as well as our changing attitudes towards
'youth' and the countryside. The images show young people enjoying a new sense of freedom -
hiking, rock climbing, folk singing and even the odd bit of skinny-dipping.

The collection includes everything from silent movies through to video, and all promote the
YHA's central mission of encouraging young people to enjoy the benefits of the countryside.
Most of the films have not been broadcast before, as they were originally shown in cinemas,
hostels and community halls.

Contributors include Lord Puttnam, hostel workers, film-makers, actors and historians.

The Weather ep03 Winds.WnA
Mon 27 Apr 2009 21:00 on BBC Four

Documentary series about the weather looks at wind, caused by the interaction of
temperature, pressure and the earth's rotation which took scientists over a thousand
years to fully explain.

We witness some remarkable wind-related stories, such as the tornado that flung
Dorothy Allwright and her caravan into the air and how Scottish engineer James Blyth
invented the first electricity-producing wind turbine in 1887.

Once we looked to the gods to explain the wind, until science unlocked its mysteries.
Today, we may have come to understand the wind but we will never master it, and we
ignore this elemental force at our peril.

Time Shift s09ep01 Farm to Pharma The Rise and Rise of Food Science

NFO:
Time Shift s09ep01 Farm to Pharma The Rise and Rise of Food Science.WnA
Thu 30 Apr 2009 21:00 BBC Four

Documentary which explores the history of British food science, taking a fascinating voyage
through over a century of petri-dishes, vitamins and E-numbers.

The connection between food manufacturers and the white coat brigade is nothing new. One
hundred and fifty years before Heston Blumenthal, Birmingham chemist Alfred Bird was
reinventing custard because his wife had an allergy to eggs.

By the 1930s, George Orwell was already complaining about the chemical by-products that the
British people were eating, but when war gave scientists a chance to remake the British diet
the improvement in the nation's health was extraordinary.

Charting the growing role that food science has played in our daily lives, we meet Tony
Blake, the food scientist who pioneered instant soup for Batchelors, and we learn about
biochemist Jack Drummond, the tragic mastermind of British food in the Second World War, who
died alongside his family as in a mysterious murder.

We discover how vegetarian product Quorn was invented to prevent a global food crisis and
how breakthroughs in flavour chemistry helped create the day-glo processed foods of the
1970s. We recall Margaret Thatcher's early career as a food scientist and find out why there
was no such thing as a free lunch when it came to the promise of fat-free snacks.

Henry VIII..Mind Of A Tyrant - Tyrant

NFO:
Presenting a vivid four-part biography, Starkey goes inside the mind of Henry VIII. This is not the story of Henry and his six wives, but an unprecedented examination to find out how Prince Charming became Bluebeard, the English Stalin.

The final programme in the series examines how Henry, having inherited a chronically weak English crown, forged it into an instrument of unprecedented power, and then wielded it to change forever the nature of England and the English.

The courtiers who had helped Cromwell dispatch Anne Boleyn hoped that the schism with Rome would now be reversed. They were soon disappointed. The destruction of the monasteries proceeded apace, with the loot flowing into Henry's coffers.

But such unprecedented actions caused isolation abroad and rebellion at home. Henry's response showed him at his most duplicitous and ruthless. He lured the rebels' leader to London with the promise of talks and then had him hung, drawn and quartered.

Meanwhile, Henry's private life was hardly less turbulent. The death of Jane Seymour robbed him of someone he was genuinely fond of, and who had given him the male heir he craved. His marriage to Katherine Howard briefly rekindled the flames of desire, but her adultery (real, this time) made her another victim of court intrigue.

David Starkey's archival research has revealed the full story behind her tragic fate. But as Henry grew older, more ill and more dangerous to all around him, he was busy forging a fiercely independent England, where coastal fortifications and an expanding Tudor navy gave tangible expression to a new sense of national destiny.

3/4 - The Far East

With £25,000 in his pocket from the sale of his flat, Conor Woodman travels across four continents, trading in all kinds of products with the aim of doubling his money.

The third leg of his adventure begins back in China where he picks up his newly carved piece of jade. It has cost him £5,000 so far but he's confident he can treble his investment by selling to a rich collector in Taiwan. Bids come thick and fast, but Conor wants to hold out for a top dollar price. Will he come to regret his confident approach?

Next stop is Japan, and Conor decides premium quality tea from the highlands of Taiwan is what the Japanese are crying out for. That might be true, but Japanese bureaucracy means Conor can't set up a market stall and he's reduced to approaching people in the street.

Things are going badly and he gambles on selling freshly caught fish. He negotiates a deal with a local fisherman, fishes all day and drives through the night to a giant sushi market. His perseverance pays off as Conor sells his fish - but for how much?
