The Weather ep02 Snow.WnA
Mon 20 Apr 2009 21:00 on BBC Four

Documentary series about the weather looks at snow, that most fleeting and beautiful
of elements which endlessly fascinates us.

Using rare footage we journey into the microscopically small world of the snow
crystal, finding out how a snowflake forms and why it is always six-sided.

The science of snow tests British Rail's claim that the snow that crippled their
rolling stock in 1991 really was the 'wrong type of snow', and explains how a British
company is the world's biggest producer of snow.

Louis Theroux - A Place for Paedophiles

NFO:
Louis Theroux - A Place for Paedophiles.WnA
Sun 19 Apr 2009 21:00 on BBC Two

Coalinga Mental Hospital in California houses more than 500 of the most disturbed
criminals in America – convicted paedophiles. Most have already served lengthy prison
sentences but have been deemed unsafe for release. Instead they have been sent here
for an indefinite time. They have only two choices: accept the fact they will never
live as free men in society again, or submit to a programme of rehabilitation and
therapy run by the hospital's psychologists.

Louis has gained access to Coalinga to film with patients and therapists, and to
consider whether these men – whose history of sexual violence is often long and
ingrained – could ever be sufficiently changed by therapy to justify their release.

Spending time with those undergoing treatment, Louis wrestles with whether he can ever
allow himself to believe men whose whole history is defined by deception and deceit.
At times, the honesty of the patients appears disarming and sincere. At others, the
language of therapy seems more to mask their true natures than to reveal them.

Among the patients is James. After six years of therapy and a physical castration, he
appears to have come to understand the enormity of the crimes he committed. He is
determined to prove to society that he can be trusted again, and has been recommended
for release by the hospital.

Over the course of Louis's visit, he discovers that, of the hundreds of men the
hospital has accommodated, only 13 have ever completed the therapy programme. Most
refuse even to participate, and many – fiercely deluded about their crimes – talk
bitterly about the programme, arguing that the facilities it offers (therapy, tennis,
softball and music) are designed less with the intention of rehabilitation than of the
long–term incarceration of men who have already served their time.

Louis explores the dark world of Coalinga, and finds an institution committed to
helping and treating people but also a place that ultimately offers society a way of
confining its most loathed offenders for the rest of their days.

Henry VIII..Mind Of A Tyrant - Lover

NFO:
(C4HD, 9:00pm Monday 20th April, 2009. Duration 50Mins.)

To mark the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII's accession to the throne, Dr David Starkey travels across Europe to understand the inner life of this feared English king.

Presenting a vivid four-part biography, Starkey goes inside the mind of Henry VIII. This is not the story of Henry and his six wives, but an unprecedented examination to find out how Prince Charming became Bluebeard, the English Stalin.

This episode traces Henry's ten-year affair with Anne Boleyn. Henry began to pursue Anne in early 1526. As lust turned to love, he conceived the idea of marrying her. But that required a Papal annulment of his marriage to Catherine.

The Weather ep01

NFO:
The Weather ep01 Rain.WnA
Mon 13 Apr 2009 21:00 BBC Four

Documentary series about the weather looks at rain. It's an essential part of being
British, giving us the English lawn, the sliding tackle and endless grounds for
complaint, but what do we really know about rain?

The programme uncovers the true shape of a raindrop, shows how and why rain falls and
tells remarkable stories of how we have adapted or succumbed to this elemental force
of nature, such as James Glaisher's seven-mile hot air balloon ascent in 1862 and how
Charles Macintosh invented the waterproof coat.

The Victorians believed that they could master the rain and push it aside, but today
climate change threatens us with rain that is wilder and more unpredictable than ever.

Henry VIII: Mind Of A Tyrant - Warrior

NFO:
To mark the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII's accession to the throne, Dr David Starkey travels across Europe to understand the inner life of this feared English king.

Presenting a vivid four-part biography, Starkey goes inside the mind of Henry VIII. This is not the story of Henry and his six wives, but an unprecedented examination to find out how Prince Charming became Bluebeard, the English Stalin.

Henry's father had won and defended the crown in battle. For Henry, this was the mark of true regal legitimacy and he was determined to emulate his father and win even greater glory. However, to wage war Henry had to free himself from the councillors he had inherited from his father and be his own man.

Starkey traces Henry's quest to become a major player in Europe, his successes at the Battle of the Spurs and the Field of the Cloth of Gold and his eventual humiliation after the Battle of Pavia.

Throughout these years, his relationship with the brilliant, Machiavellian Thomas Wolsey was central to his reign. But even Wolsey could not disguise the relative impotence of England and her monarchy compared to the great European powers.

These foreign disappointments were mirrored by the gradual deterioration in Henry's marriage. If Henry had died, like so many, of the sweating sickness in 1525, he would have barely registered in history, his reign a feeble coda to the story of England's medieval monarchy.

But events were about to take an extraordinary turn. Henry would remake himself, his throne and his kingdom - and all for love.

Around the World in 80 Trades - Part 1

Around the World in 80 Trades

1/4 - Africa

With £25,000 in his pocket from the sale of his flat, Conor Woodman travels across four continents, trading in all kinds of products with the aim of doubling his money.

It's easy to mock presenter Conor Woodman's project here. For a start he is described as a former City dealer, a breed currently just above bankers in the public's affection. Woodman's idea is to travel the globe buying and selling stuff for a profit. This form of "adventure capitalism" is all about cutting out the middle man, he tells us. But when the middle men in question are Sudanese camel herders who walk for three weeks across the desert to transport their wares, it's not surprising they don't take kindly to Woodman turning up with a truck and trying to hack into their business. Encouragingly, they treat Woodman like a bad smell. "At every turn I seem to be getting the cold shoulder," he marvels. The wonder is that his attempts to buy Zambian coffee to sell in Cape Town and South African chilli sauce to sell in India are intriguing, watchable and almost impressive.

It is a story of the Italy we all know and love, enhanced by a look at the secret side of the country that only an insider can show us. Da Mosta reveals the full glories of Renaissance Italy and the country's astonishing cultural diversity, which was only recently unified under one flag. Born into a distinguished family, with a Venetian father and a Sicilian mother, what better guide could there be than one who knows and loves this magnificent country?
This series was rebroadcast by The Travel Channel in January of 2007 and repeated on BBC2 in May 2007.

Charles Darwin Evolution's Voice

NFO:
Charles Darwin Evolution’s Voice

He had to battle prejudice, ignorance and his own fear in his search for the truth. More than any other scientist, he changed mankind's view of the world and our place in it. Charles Darwin's theory of evolution stands as one of the most important discoveries in the history of science. Yet in his lifetime, Darwin was reluctant to reveal what he had learned for fear that it would make him and his family despised outcasts. He was right to worry; more than a century later, there are those who cannot accept his findings. At the time, they were viewed by many as heresy. From his historic voyage on the Beagle to his personal anguish over publicizing his findings, this is a fascinating profile of the life and times of the great naturalist. Excerpts from his journals detail his discoveries while leading scientists and scholars, including the author of Charles Darwin: Evolution of a Naturalist, shed light on his private life, public persona and monumental legacy.

Did Darwin Kill God

NFO:
Did Darwin Kill God?
BBC2 - 31 March 2009

There are some who believe that Darwin's theory of evolution has weakened religion, fuelled in part by Richard Dawkins' publishing phenomenon The God Delusion. Conor Cunningham argues that nothing could be further from the truth.

Cunningham is a firm believer in the theory of evolution, but he is also a Christian. He believes that the clash between Darwin and God has been hijacked by extremists - fundamentalist believers who reject evolution on one side, and fundamentalist atheists on the other. Cunningham attempts to overturn what he believes are widely held but mistaken assumptions in the debate between religion and evolution.

He travels to the Middle East where he shows that from the very outset, Christianity warned against literal readings of the biblical story of creation. In Britain, he reveals that, at the time, Darwin's theory of evolution was welcomed by the Anglican and Catholic Churches. Instead, he argues that the conflict between Darwin and God was manufactured by American creationists in the 20th century for reasons that had very little to do with science and religion and a great deal to do with politics and morality.

Finally, he comes face to face with some of the most eminent evolutionary biologists, geneticists and philosophers of our time to examine whether the very latest advances in evolutionary theory do in fact kill God.

Henry VIII: The Mind of a Tyrant - part 1

NFO:
Presenting a vivid four-part biography, Starkey goes inside the mind of Henry VIII. This is not the story of Henry and his six wives, but an unprecedented examination to find out how Prince Charming became Bluebeard, the English Stalin.

This episode - Prince - follows the dramatic events of Henry's childhood, events that shaped his personality and his attitude to kingship.

In 1485, on the field at Bosworth, Henry's father, Henry Tudor, seized the crown from the defeated Yorkist king Richard III. To us, this event marks the end of the Wars of the Roses but to contemporaries it was not clear that this bitter dynastic struggle was truly over. Henry, Tudor's second son, was created Duke of York to link the royal house to the defeated faction.

But Henry had a rival in the shape of Perkin Warbeck, who claimed to be the real Duke of York and rightful king. Henry Tudor would have to defend his throne twice in battle, and his son's life depended on the outcome.

The death of his brother Arthur made Henry Prince of Wales, and his father's heir and rival.
