This year is the 20th anniversary of the C14 dating of the Shroud of Turin that identified the most famous relic in Christendom as a fake. But since then, despite many attempts, no one has been able to determine who the forger was or how it might have been done. Rageh Omaar sets out to find out exactly what it is about the image that has defied imitation and explores new evidence that challenges the verdict on the Shroud.

With unique access to the Shroud itself and those closest to it, Rageh goes on his own journey of discovery. He also visits the leader of the 1978 US investigation that was given access to the cloth for a week, Dr John Jackson, who reveals the results from the data collected and a lifetime of research.

Two other Shrouds of Christ have existed at different times down the centuries. One is the Shroud of Constantinople, described as having an image of Christ and stolen by the Crusaders in 1204. The Turin Shroud appeared 150 years later in the family of one of those Crusaders. The other is the Shroud of Jerusalem that wrapped Jesus' body. With the help of a team of international scholars Rageh explores new evidence that links the Turin Shroud to both locations and times. Could they be one and the same? But if they are, where does that leave the Carbon 14 test?

New information about the behaviour of C14 in the atmosphere exists which was unknown 20 years ago when the Shroud was dated. A new hypothesis has come forward that could explain how genuinely old linen could produce a much younger date in certain conditions.

Life in Gyantse, Tibet's third largest town continues.

The monks begin their elaborate preparations for New Year, one of
Tibet's biggest festivals. In town, Lhakpa, a local rickshaw driver
struggles to earn money as winter approaches. He embarks on a scheme
to buy and sell puppies... but with disastrous consequences.
Meanwhile, his 5-year old nephew Ozer is rushed into hospital with a
life-threatening heart condition, which only plunges the family
further into debt.

Jianzang, a local hotel owner, gets involved in a court case, which
has a surprising outcome. And in Tangmai village, the local doctor
cannot cure her crippling stomach pains; Lhamo worries they result
from bad khama in a previous life and she seeks a solution in her
Buddhist faith.

But as New Year arrives, everyone puts their worries behind them as
they celebrate fifteen riotous days of their New Year holiday.

If you're a lover of 16th-century history, best steer clear of this. A drama documentary is always going to flounder trying to re-create the clash-of-civilisations story of Hernan Cortes's conquest of Mexico - it's on too horrific a scale. (Maybe Hollywood should try.) But at least Brian McCardie's gutsy performance in the Heroes and Villains strand gives us a flavour of what might have driven Cortes - a mixture of piety, dread and sheer, mad-eyed folly. Watching McCardie, hedged with re-enactments and computer effects, you can just about swallow that a deranged adventurer and a handful of men, with no authority from the King of Spain and supplies pinched from the Governor of Cuba, could bring down the Aztec empire, which included a city (Tenochtitlan) bigger than anything in Europe. But you may need to suspend your disbelief from the rafters. RT reviewer - David Butcher

out of a job.

In the nearby town of Gyantse, Rincheu, a local builder, struggles to find
workers during the harvest to complete his first government commission, while
in the monastery, the monks recover from a visit by the highest ranking
Buddhist Lama in Tibet. Meanwhile, Tseden helps a family to arrange their
daughters wedding, but the bride is unaware she has to marry her husband's
brother too.

There are shocking vignettes (one Peterborough GP's surgery Samuels visits has had 1,000 new immigrant patients in six months) and comic moments, which mount into a drolly entertaining look at a very modern problem.

Marc Newson is an industrial designer whose imagination knows no bounds. He has created everything from the iconic Lockheed Lounge chair - the most expensive piece of furniture by a living designer ever to sell at auction - to coat hangers, dish drainers and vibrators. His latest and most audacious project is a suborbital jet that just might be the future of long-distance travel.

In this profile, Marc Newson talks to Alan Yentob about his inspirations, thought processes and designs. He remembers when, aged just 23, he sculpted the Lockheed Lounge from a piece of foam in a frenzied few days. 'It felt like a monumental moment.' He couldn't get rid of the Lounges back then. Today, with just thirteen in existence, they are one of the most sought-after collectors' items in the world.

The programme follows Newson to Bodylines, an extraordinary Aston Martin panel beating workshop outside Milton Keynes, where men who usually work on vintage cars create his limited-edition furniture pieces - and one craftsman gives him a piece of his mind about the flaws in his Black Hole table.

In the marble quarries of Carrara in Italy, we see the processes behind his exquisite sculptures. Newson's designs push marble into contemporary shapes, with each piece carved from one individual block. The programme also takes in the launch of Newson's Space Plane, which, he hopes, will one day do exactly what it says on the tin.

Alive - Crash in a Volcano

Stunt pilot Craig Hosking, along with aerial crew Mike Benson and Chris Duddy, set out to film a sequence of shots in which a helicopter appears to descend into a volcano, for the Hollywood thriller Sliver (1993). To do this, the crew intended to fly over Hawaii's most active vent – Kilauea.

The plan was to fly over the crater as low and as slowly as they could. With his camera trained on the crater, Mike was going to zoom into the bubbling larva and create the illusion of falling into it.

Alive - Terror in Frostbite Canyon

He also visits the remains of the Emperor Hadrian's palatial retreat which, in turn, inspired those.

However, he does not overlook the artistic achievements of the Moorish culture that flourished around the Mediterranean between these two great Italian eras. He travels to Marrakesh to visit the Aguedal, one of the oldest continuously maintained gardens in the world, and then on to Spain to the Alhambra, thought by many to be the most perfect garden in the world.

BBC Horizon - Are We Alone in the Universe

Part 2: Deadline
The engineers and builders are about to hit the biggest deadline on the project so far. The tracks which bring the trains into St Pancras must be moved from the east to the west side of the station, over the course of a single weekend. If they fail, the entire �5.8 billion project will be thrown off-schedule.

Meanwhile, Chief Architect Alastair Lansley receives some terrifying news that may prevent him from seeing the project through.

Part 3: The Inspections
Engineers race to finish the base build of the station. Huge bonuses are at stake and if the engineers don't meet their deadline they could incur penalties of �50,000 a day until their work is finished. For 30 year old engineer Claire Clarr this is the biggest project of her career and a series of gruelling inspections will determine whether or not work on her section is signed off as complete. To add to the pressure Claire's boss Mark Allison delivers news which will change the course of her working life.

Part 4: The Icon Men
With the base build complete, St Pancras must start its face lift. Commercial Director Mike Luddy dreams of creating a new style of station and of transforming St Pancras into a luxury destination in its own right.

Instead of fast food outlets he wants to install gastro pubs and fine dining. The highlight will be the longest champagne bar in Europe and a nine metre high bronze statue which he hopes will be an iconic centrepiece for the station.

Part 5: The Sharp End
A team of spin doctors and marketing gurus have to sell Commercial Director Mike Luddy's vision for St Pancras station. They need to convince press and public that a place synonymous with prostitution, drugs and violent crime has been transformed into the chic destination station for Europe.

But deadlines are slipping and the picture looks very different on the ground. The builders are behind schedule, the 60 shops may not finish work on time and there are critical problems with the cherry on the St Pancras cake - a 9 meter statue specially commissioned for the station. And with the station opening in just a few weeks time and Eurostar already selling tickets from their new destination will St Pancras be ready in time?

Part 6: The Unveiling
The culmination of 11 years work and �5.8 billion of public and private money.

While the builders and engineers labour 7 days a week to try and finish major construction works Head of Marketing Jon Teeman is planning an enormous opening ceremony. A 1,000 seat arena is being erected and Her Majesty the Queen has agreed to open the station. With an invitation list boasting the great and the good and the eyes of the world's media upon them the opening night has to be a success.

Meanwhile the station is still not finished and the builders must complete works in order for Eurostar to start running. With an expected 50 million passengers per year due to start travelling from the station on November 14th the deadline must be hit at all costs.

"Napoleon's Obsession: The Quest for Egypt" details the real facts behind a little-known account in Napoleon's illustrious military career. Those who do know of the French leader's invasion of Egypt, and the so-called Battle of the Pyramids, may have fallen victim to one of the best public relations campaigns in history. As we learn in this documentary, hosted by renown Egyptologist Bob Brier, Bonaparte's attempt to conquer Eqypt was nothing short of an exercise in vanity. By 1798, General Bonaparte was looking for new military challenges after conquering Europe. He turned his sights on the historical and symbolic wealth of Egypt and The East. Economical with everything except the lives of his men, Bonaparte was ill prepared for this invasion and marched his troops from Alexandria through 130-degree desert heat in woolen uniforms and with very little water. Napoleon had a few victories, including a melee against the defending Mamelukes of Cairo, which became know as the Battle of the Pyramids (in reality, it was fought in a melon patch, miles from the city). On the whole, the campaign was disastrous; the French Fleet had a nasty encounter with Admiral Nelson, and the troops were stranded in Egypt without reinforcements or supplies. Napoleon's reaction? He commissioned paintings of victories and wrote glowing letters. He even returned to France a hero after sneaking out of Egypt in the middle of the night, leaving his men behind, and not even informing his second in command. Thankfully, Brier reminds us several times throughout the production of the practical contributions Napoleon made from this ill-conceived campaign. To Egypt he brought several artists, scholars and scientists and established the Institut de l'Egypte. Their work and the soldiers' looting led to the discovery of the Rosetta stone and the birth of modern Egyptology. But while these contributions are impressive, Bonaparte's campaign in Egypt included horrible atrocities against Turkish civilians. Still, Brier's enthusiasm brings to life the many illustrations, some by Institut de l'Egypte's own Vivant Denon, which are combined with stunning footage of Egypt and the landscapes and sites along the French army's campaign road. In addition, crisp editing by James Marshall and concise direction by Peter Spry-Leverton make for an informative and handsomely packed hour of entertainment.

We discover how Mission Control's total computing power was the equivalent of one of today's laptops while the power of the lunar module was equal to a modern digital watch. Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin reveals how a ballpoint pen saved him and Neil Armstrong from a lonely death stranded on the moon; and we discover how behind the scenes, so great were the fears that the crew wouldn't return that during the mission White House officials prepared a secret memorial speech for President Nixon to deliver to the world in the event of tragedy.

"Our national obsession with the weather should really be an obsession with the jet stream." So argues this brilliantly informative documentary as it explains the workings of the high-altitude ribbon of air that blows around the northern hemisphere at hurricane speeds. First observed by US bomber pilots in the Second World War, "the jet" is the engine of the atmosphere: it makes flights from America to Europe quicker (if pilots latch onto it, they can get a 200mph tailwind), but it also cranks up our weather events - last year's floods were partly caused by "an extremely sluggish jet". Now meteorologists believe it's shifting in ways that could have a dramatic impact on the UK; exactly how, no-one's quite sure (they need bigger computers), but it'll probably mean more floods.

It's an uphill battle remaking a tale that's burnt into our memories via a classic film. Then again, uphill battles are mostly what this docudrama consists of. I've never seen so many dusty skirmishes, swordfights and punch-ups in an hour - well mounted, but tiring after a while. Anthony Flanagan plays the great slave general who in 73 BC led a rebellion against Rome. But as well as the Roman legions he has to overcome a literal script where characters spell everything out to each other. ("We can't run forever!" "This is about power!" etc.) Still, it's an inspiring story.

There are lots of people who don't care if the goods they buy are original or knock-offs, as long as they look like the real thing and they're cheap. After all, what harm can there be in buying a fake designer bag or trainers - all you're doing is denting the profits of the multinational manufacturers. But, as the first of this two-part investigation shows, it goes much deeper than that. For instance, with the counterfeit market now encompassing pharmaceutical drugs, consumers could be damaging themselves, too. Among the more eye-opening revelations is a massive seven-storey shopping mall in China selling nothing but fakes, and a peek into a backstreet factory that manufactures eggs out of industrial chemicals because it's cheaper than keeping real chickens.
