Simon Russell Beale brings us this four-part series on the development of Christian church music. The subject may sound dry, but this opener is not. Russell Beale shows how the music developed from plainsong with a single melody into magisterial polyphony: the sound of many voices singing independent melodies. We hear the first harmonies - in Western music at least - often in the settings where they were first performed and are taken through practice and theory, bringing it to life. It builds up to a sensory treat worth whacking up the volume for, as the singers perform four-part harmonies, bathed in the light from stained-glass windows. Mind-blowing to medieval listeners and deeply stirring to modern.
