20th Century Battlefields - 1942 Battle of Midway

NFO:

20th Century Battlefields - 1942 Battle of Midway (11th June 2007, 9pm BBC2)

In the second episode of this new series Peter and Dan Snow fly to the middle of the Pacific Ocean to give a blow-by-blow account of the battle of Midway.

For a few crucial minutes in June 1942 the outcome of the war in the Pacific hung in the balance. Peter explains how the aircraft carriers of the US Pacific Fleet that had narrowly escaped disaster at Pearl Harbor were now all that could stop the carriers of the mighty Imperial Navy of Japan. It was a new type of sea-battle, where opponents ships never laid sight on each other. It was the bombers that struck the blows. Dan Snow tells the pilot's stories, and experiences for himself what it would have been like for the sailors as they struggled to fight fires as these massive ships came under attack and burst into flames.

Palestine Is Still The Issue (2002)

NFO:
In 1977, the award-winning journalist and film-maker, John Pilger, made a documentary called Palestine Is Still The Issue (1977). He told how almost a million Palestinians had been forced off their land in 1948, and again in 1967. In this in-depth documentary, he has returned to the West Bank of the Jordan and Gaza, and to Israel, to ask why the Palestinians, whose right of return was affirmed by the United Nations more than half a century ago, are still caught in a terrible limbo -- refugees in their own land, controlled by Israel in the longest military occupation in modern times.

"The fate and struggle of the Palestinians," says Pilger, "are not just critical to the overdue recognition of their basic human rights, but are also central to whether the region, and the wider world, are plunged into war. Israel is now one of the biggest military powers in the world. While nothing changes, the dangers become greater. This is a film about a nation of people, traumatized, humiliated and yet resilient. In trying to liberate less than a quarter of historic Palestine, they have had no army, no air force, and no powerful friends -- and have fought back with slingshots and now with the terrorism of the suicide bombers."

In a series of extraordinary interviews with both Palestinians and Israelis, John Pilger weaves together the issue of Palestine. He speaks to the families of suicide bombers and their victims; he sees the humiliation of Palestinians imposed on them at myriad checkpoints and with a permit system not dissimilar to apartheid South Africa's infamous pass laws. He goes into the refugee camps and meets children who, he says, "no longer dream like other children, or if they do, it is about death."

A curator has a stint in jail. The BM wants to inspire people who don't

Prison - all safely contained in an art installation.

Meanwhile, Venetia Porter, a five-foot, shaggy-haired whirlwind, is being

modern art from the Middle East brings together artists from across religious

BBC4 - Time Shift- Time Gentlemen, Please - The History of the British Pub

NFO:
Time Shift examines the very special place occupied by the pub in British society.

The pub is a British institution. In fact a good 'local' is as important to some as a post office, supermarket or place of worship. The image of a warming fire and a jovial landlord, chatting to a core of regulars is certainly enough to entice me out for a pint of 'Old Bob' and a bag of pork scratchings! While such a romantic image is still a reality in many public houses, others have had to react to changing times.

In the 1950s and 60s, pubs tended to be working-class male establishments, but as restaurants flourished and supermarkets increased their off licence capabilities, pub attendances fell. When brewery giant Bass Carrington bought up many of the 3,000 UK smaller breweries in the early 60s, change was inescapable. But for the campaigning of the real ale groups (Camra), many of our traditional ales would also have disappeared in favour of the more profitable designer beers.

Kate Thomas' programme, narrated by Arthur Smith, looks at the transformation of the British pub over the past 50 years.

Stealing a Nation (2005)

NFO:
Information

Award-winning reporter John Pilger exposes how the British Government expelled the population of a group of islands, including Diego Garcia, so the US could build a military base.

STEALING A NATION is an extraordinary film about the plight of people of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean - secretly and brutally expelled from their homeland by British governments in the late 1960s and early 1970s, to make way for an American military base. The base, on the main island of Diego Garcia, was a launch pad for the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

A remarkable dossier of evidence has been put together by Pilger and producer Chris Martin, all from official files, charting one of the most shocking conspiracies of modern times, which continues today.

Diego Garcia is America's largest military base in the world, outside the US. There are more than 4,000 troops, two bomber runways, thirty warships and a satellite spy station. The Pentagon calls it an "indispensable platform" for policing the world.

Before the Americans came, more than 2,000 people lived on the islands, many with roots back to the late 18th century. There were thriving villages, a school, a hospital, a church, a railway and an undisturbed way of life. The islands were, and still are, a British crown colony. In the 1960s, the government of Harold Wilson struck a secret deal with the United States to hand over Diego Garcia. The Americans demanded that the islands be "swept" and "sanitized". Unknown to Parliament and to the US Congress, the British government plotted with Washington to expel the entire population - in secrecy and in breach of the United Nations Charter.

This case went to the courts in 2000. The queen acted on it, ruling against it in 2004.
Last year(2006) the High Court rejected the governments argument that the royal prerogative, exercised by ministers in the Queen's name, was immune from scrutiny.

Liberia. The highly trained and fully armed paramilitaries arrived in the
capital Monrovia, in January for six months.

Liberia is recovering from 14 years of civil war during which child soldiers
roamed the streets and sexual violence was common. Today the presence of
thousands of peacekeepers keeps it stable but rape is still a major problem.
Will the presence of Indian women, armed to the teeth, patrolling the streets
empower local women, or will the culture shock the Indian women face in their
first visit out of India, stop them from interacting with local Liberians.

If they are a success we could start seeing a lot more women with guns
wearing blue UN helmets, patrolling war torn countries.

BBC Wildlife in a Warzone

NFO:
It's been 15 years since scientist Sanjayan Muttulingam has been home to Sierra Leone - a country dubbed 'the worst place on Earth' by the UN.

Set on Africa's western coastline, Sierra Leone, now ravaged by civil war, was once a peaceful, vibrant, and lush country, famous for its wildlife and rare species revered by Scientists and Conservationists the world over.

Sanjayan makes an emotional and curious return to his homeland to discover whether natural beauty still remains, and whether, despite the hunting of animals, wildlife can still exist in a warzone.

The first stop is the country's capital Freetown, where Sanjayan discovers evidence of war everywhere he turns. Then, venturing deeper into the jungle, Sanjayan follows in the footsteps of his hero, British naturalist Gerald Durrell, who ventured on an animal-hunting safari in the country's tropical jungle in 1965.

Using Durrell's expedition records, Sanjayan goes in search of the wildlife that once populated the vast and mountainous landscape of Sierra Leone. Can he find the mythical pygmy hippopotamus, the many kinds of monkeys that call this country home, and the rare bird species that exist in no other place but here?

The Million Pound Bird Book
BBC 4 Mon 18 Jun, 20:00-21:00 60mins

A profile of the artist and ornithologist John James Audobon, famous for painting
and cataloguing the birds of North America.

Born in Haiti in 1785, John James Audobon was raised in France and to avoid the
Napoleonic Wars he escaped to The United States in 1803, where he began to study
birds. Unable to find a publisher for his Philadelphia book of Birds, he travelled
to England where he found success and went on to publish subsequent books, the
seven volumes of Birds of America featuring 435 hand-coloured lithographs of
life-sized birds, and five volumes of Ornithological Biographies. Sold by
subscription these books fetched $1,000 each.

Storyville: Laughing With Hitler - Ve Hav Veys Of Making You Laugh.

NFO:
BBC 4
Saturday 9th June 2007
21:10 to 22:10

Storyville: Laughing With Hitler - Ve Hav Veys Of Making You Laugh.

Documentary which examines the history of the Third Reich through the jokes told by and about the Nazis and the fate that befell some of the joke tellers. In the early days of the Nazi era, jokes about Hitler were punishable as treason, and during the war they were even seen as unpatriotic, a crime punishable by death. Cabaret artiste, Werner Finck, was imprisoned in a concentration camp, but then released, while actor Fritz Muliar's anti-Hitler jokes landed him in a penal battalion in Russia. The humour here is dark: a survey of the antiNazi jokes that surfaced, rather than flourished, under Hitler and a horrible potted history of the deaths and prison sentences suffered by the jokers themselves.

Lie Lab 1/3

NFO:
In the first of three programmes, two British Asians nicknamed the Tipton
Taliban, accused of being terrorists and imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay before
being released without charge, agree to an experimental lie-detecting test
to prove their innocence. It uses a brain scanner, rather than the traditional
polygraph. Although it takes a while to get to the actual experiment, be
patient: the background as to how the pair came to be captured in Afghanistan
is a fascinating story in itself. The test result is probably less conclusive
than the programme-makers would have wished, but it does have a remarkable
effect on one of the men. Next week's second programme questions a woman
convicted of poisoning a child.

Horizon - Uranus Encounter (1986)

NFO:
First Broadcast in Britain on BBC - 26 May 1986

The programme records the information transmitted back to Earth from the spacecraft Voyager II as it flew past the seventh planet, Uranus, and its rings and moons - Oberon, Umbriel, Titania, Ariel, Miranda (named after sprites and spirits in English literature). Failure of the onboard aging computer had to be overcome to rescue the image data. Voyager's cameras used alternately filters of red, green and blue from which composite colour pictures were made.

Dr Andrew Ingersoll (Imaging Team) explains Uranus' tipped over configuration. Using an orange, he shows sunlight striking on one hemisphere and points out that a Uranian year is equivalent to 80 Earth years. He discusses the weather on Uranus. Its cloud patterns were not easily visible on Voyager images, but an enhanced series of images is shown as a "movie" of the atmospheric bands and movement.

Dr Carolyn Porco (Imaging Team) shows images of the newly discovered rings around Uranus with clearly defined detail and structure (looking like the grooves on a phonograph record) composed of boulders circling Uranus. A sheet of fine material forms the rings, which is probably being eroded.
Shepherd moons in orbit inside and outside rings were revealed by computer study.
The moon Oberon is about half the size of Earth's moon and has a giant crater.

Dr Torrence Johnson (Imaging Team) proposes why Uranian moons appear as they are, showing craters, volcanic filling of craters with a surface of methane and ammonia ice as well as water ice. On a computer screen, he shows an intensity trace across Titania on computer screen. He suggests that extra-terrestrial rock brought much carbon resulting in black patterning of the icy white surface. By mixing ice with lamp black he demonstrates this theory.

Titania shows gigantic canyons and rifts visible on the surface.

Dr Larry Soderblum described the fault systems on the moon, Ariel, caused by stretching of planet's surface with valleys & viscous flow. On the moon Miranda, cliff formations are pointed out. The unexpected types of terrains indicate tremendous upheaval in the formation of the moons.

Dr Hal Masursky (Imaging Team) compares the Little Colorado River and its formation of sinuous valleys on Earth similar to those on the moons of Uranus. On Ariel, surface water would not be possible due to its great cold. He then shows a sinuous valley formed by lava flow. But the sinuous valleys on Ariel do not show the marginal ridges where lava first cooled along the edges.

Dr Eugene Shoemaker (Imaging Team) states that the extraordinary features on the Uranian moon Miranda are found in some places but not all over the planet. Craters in different places reveal sometime white and sometime dark floors. The vermillion cliffs of Grand Canyon are contrasted with cliffs on Miranda that stand 24 times higher. Demonstrating with beaker of ice and rock, he proposes that Miranda had been periodically smashed into pieces that scrambled ice and rock fragments together that reformed in the patterns now seen.

Uranus was probably formed rotating with its axis similar to the other planets, but was subjected to a ferocious collision that tipped it on its side. A gyroscope shows how the original rotation continues although the direction of the axis is changed.

The Neptune encounter planned for 1989 is previewed with an animation.

NFO:
Thu 14 Jun, 7:30 pm - 8:00 pm 30mins

Shopping For Posterity

The collections of the British Museum don't stand still, but funding for new
acquisitions is in crisis. The money allocated to new purchases has decreased
from around a million pounds a year in the 1980s to just £100,000 today.

This programme follows curator Chris Spring's mission to buy La Bouche du Roi,
an anti-slavery installation made of petrol cans. He can't afford it without
help from the Art Fund, but will his pitch result in success? Meanwhile Philip
Attwood is on a Rotterdam barge buying contemporary medals, and Judy Rudoe
receives a Soviet style gift from the modern entrepreneurial Russian industry.

This World - Race for the Beach

NFO:
BBC 2 Thu 14 Jun, 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm 30mins

Meccaa Laalaa, a pretty student in Sydney, Australia sees herself as a good
Muslim and a good Australian. She's the first devout Muslim woman to try to
become a lifeguard - wearing a full length 'burqini'. A year after riots
between Muslim gangs and white youths, Meccaa and other moderate Lebanese
want to change the image of Muslims on the beach. The surf is fierce, the
pressure to pass the demanding test intense - all in the glare of world
media. But there's a catch - Meccaa's not a swimmer. If she passes, she'll
be a world famous role model for Muslim integration. If she fails she lets
her community down.

Natural World 2007 11/11 - Wye: Voices from the Valley

NFO:
This is an unashamedly lyrical and dreamy film, packed with glowing sunsets,
dewy apples and shards of light dancing on the water. The thread that runs
throughout is the River Wye and a handful of people who make their living
near it - a beekeeper, a fisherman, a farmer and a cidermaker (probably the
butcher, baker and candlestick-maker were elsewhere at the time). They love
the Wye and talk of it (her?) as if it's a person. The river is in their
souls, and it's easy to see why. The landscape and countryside are voluptuous
and so beautifully filmed it's like watching a poem. There's nothing for it
but to sit back and surrender to glorious shots of the countryside through
the seasons - from frost-rimed fields to sundrenched orchards.

Horizon - The Sunspot Mystery (1977)

NFO:
First broadcast in Britain on BBC2 - 7 Oct 1977

The programme presents research on the sun's aurora, solar constant (energy output), sunspot cycles, solar winds, coronal holes and tree-ring analyses with historical scientific records to show how the sun's changes affect the earth's weather. Dr. Charles Greeley Abbot believed the sun undergoes cyclic changes in output, which produces long term effects on the earth's weather.

Evidence is presented that links the drought cycle with the number of magnetically-hyperactive 'sunspots' (blemishes on the surface of the sun) - they reach their peak every 11 yrs. Sunspots also are linked to the Aurora Borealis displays and the variance of the 'Ozone Layer' around our atmosphere. The 11yr sunspot cycle suggest that the sun is not as constant a star as we assume, and the energy output by the sun may vary over the years to explain changing weather.

Horizon produced their programme from a film written and directed by Ben Shedd and Graham Shedd. This film perhaps editted differently was broadcast abroad under the title "The Sunspot Mystery", and subsequently that version was shown abroad on a commercial cable channel. It is the cable version, probably missing a number of minutes, sacrificed to advertisement time, that has been spliced without the ads into the file provided here.

Horizon - Genesis(1986)

NFO:
The programme presents fascinating information on embryology which reveals how babies, and other creatures, begin life as a single cell, that continually divides and differentiates into limbs and all the other specialised structures. Scientists investigate this phenomenon. Have you ever stopped to wonder how the cells of your left arm conspire to make it the same length as your right arm, although that is made by a different bunch of cells seemingly doing their own thing on the other side of your body?

From an NTSC EP off-air VHS recording made abroad in about 1987 The video is good as the off-air analog source allow. The video from a dodgy tape was rescued surprisingly well using Digital Time Base Correction. The audio is clear, but words are sometimes elided as frames have dropped out. So the soundtrack stuttersfrom time to time. But you should be too engrossed in the interesting content to care. Cropped when converted to XVid to give clean frame edges.

The Secret of El Dorado - programme summary

In 1542, the Spanish Conquistador, Francisco de Orellana ventured along the
Rio Negro, one of the Amazon Basin's great rivers. Hunting a hidden city of
gold, his expedition found a network of farms, villages and even huge walled
cities. At least that is what he told an eager audience on his return to Spain.

Survival - Mysterious Castles of Clay (1978)

NFO:
It shows African termites busy within their mound and the associated wildlife. The tall mounds of mud are the "Castles of Clay." The natural history photography with time-lapse and extreme close-up of African termites seen in their mound is breath-taking. It is the result of years of patient work by Alan Root.

The astonishing interior shots of the tongue of an aardvark seen snaking within the clay passages to slurp up termites for food is one example of the remarkable scenes. Another shows the staggering size of the termite queen - five inches - that with surrounding attending workers looks like a barrage balloon tended by a ground crew. The queen lives up to 15 years, spending her life as a huge continuous egg-laying machine.

Although it did not win when nominated for an Oscar in 1979, this film did win the Peabody Award in the same year.

The background music is unique, haunting and memorable. Orson Welles contributed a sensitive narration. An introduction and a conclusion by George Plimpton explain some of the techniques employed in the production of this unforgettable film.

If it is new to you, even if you are cool to natural history documentaries, this one will grab your attention in spite of yourself. You will enjoy it.

Although recorded abroad (NTSC) it is probably intact in the form as originally seen in Britain during the heyday of Survival Anglia.

Xavier is now thirty. No longer a student, he is not yet a well-balanced, fullfiiled adult either. His career is unsatisfying : far from being the renowned novelist he aimed to be he must be content with little jobs such as reporter or ghost writer. His greatest "achievement" in "literature" is his collaboration to the script of a corny TV soap ! His sentimental life is not much better, rhythmed by one night stands and unfinished romances. It looks as if when he seduces a woman beautiful outside and inside such as Kassia or Wendy he can't keep them. Will he ever bring his life into focus? Written by Guy Bellinger

Horizon - The Lost Pyramids of Caral

NFO:
BBC Two 9.00pm Thursday 31 January 2002
The magnificent ancient city of pyramids at Caral in Peru hit the headlines in 2001. The site is a thousand years older than the earliest known civilisation in the Americas and, at 2,627 BC, is as old as the pyramids of Egypt. Many now believe it is the fabled missing link of archaeology - a 'mother city'. If so, then these extraordinary findings could finally answer one of the great questions of archaeology: why did humans become civilised?

Horizon - The Mystery of Easter Island

NFO:
On Easter Day 1722, Dutch explorers landed on Easter Island. A civilisation isolated by 4,000km of Pacific Ocean was about to meet the outside world for the first time in centuries. The strangers were about to find something very strange themselves - an island dotted with hundreds of huge stone statues and a society that was not as primitive as they expected. The first meeting was an immense clash of cultures. (Bloody too: the sailors killed ten natives within minutes of landing.) Where had the Islanders originally come from? Why and how had they built the figures? Modern science is piecing together the story, but it is far too late for the Easter Islanders themselves.
They were virtually wiped out by a series of disasters - natural and manmade - that brought a population of 12,000 down to just 111 in a few centuries. The Island's inhabitants today all have Chilean roots, making solving the mysteries even harder. There is no one to ask about the first people of Easter Island. Although fragmentary legends have been passed down, only science can hope to explain the rise and fall of this unusual civilisation.

Horizon - Secrets of the Star Disc

NFO:
This is the extraordinary story of how a small metal disc is rewriting the epic saga of how civilisation first came to Europe, 3600 years ago. When grave robbers ransacked a Bronze Age tomb in Germany, they had no idea that they had unearthed the find of a lifetime. But they knew that it was worth selling. It was a small bronze disc of exquisite design. So they contacted the archaeologist Harald Meller, offering to sell it to him for £300,000. Meller went deep into the criminal underworld and, after a police sting, he got his disc. It depicted the sun, the moon and the stars. This suggested an understanding of the heavens greater than that of the first great civilisations, like Egypt. Could it possibly be real?
After exhaustive tests, the disc was declared genuine. Then a team of crack scientists pieced together what it meant. What emerged is a true marvel. This disc, it seems, is a Bronze Age Bible, combining an advanced understanding of the stars with some of the most sophisticated religious imagery of the age. In intellectual achievement and also age, it surpasses anything yet found in Egypt or Greece. It seems that civilisation had already dawned in Europe.

This World - Running from Mugabe

NFO:
BBC 2 Thu 7 Jun, 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm 30mins

As Zimbabwe's political and economic crisis deepens, victims of President
Robert Mugabe's violent regime are being forced to flee for their lives.

This World enters a world of paranoia and fear, following some of the
thousands of Zimbabweans who enter South Africa illegally every week.

They are running from the political and economic crisis in their country.

Some are fleeing for their lives, victims of the Mugabe government's
violent political crackdown.

But even in South Africa they cannot escape the terror of the regime.

Death squad rumours

Many live in fear of Zimbabwe's feared Central Intelligence Organisation
(CIO) - the country's secret police who are widely suspected by dissidents
of conducting surveillance operations outside Zimbabwe's border.

Rumours of death squads and kidnappings are rife.

This World speaks to refugees living in the shadow of this fear, and one
young man who fled Zimbabwe after being reluctantly drafted into the CIO.

He claims the training involved being shown how to torture using batons
and electric wires. He also says he escaped from Zimbabwe, and that he
was followed by CIO agents who have been trying to take him back to
Zimbabwe.

As they try to separate fact from fiction, events conspire to make This
World believe that they too, might be under surveillance.

Horizon Noah´s Flood , 16th December 1996

NFO:
"It all began in 1971 as a game of speculation - a bit of light relief from the rigours of tectonic and oceanographic investigation in the Mediterranean basin." American oceanographer Bill Ryan was on the scientific team which showed that the Mediterranean had been a vast desert basin until, 5 million years ago, the world's oceans rose and burst through the Straits of Gibraltar to create the Mediterranean Sea. Walter Pitman was helping to found the new science of plate tectonics. Ryan and Pitman's British associate John Dewey (now Professor of Earth Sciences at Oxford) put up an ingenious idea - could a similar cataclysmic flooding of a massive basin account for the Biblical Flood - a catastrophe of such enormity that it would remain in human memory down the ages? If so, where might it have taken place? The idea never went away and 20 years later, in 1991, Ryan and Pitman began their search. This year they will announce their findings to the scientific world. Richard Curson Smith's film takes Pitman and Ryan back to the Black Sea, where they now believe that the Flood occurred in 5,600 BC. Filmed on location in Turkey, Bulgaria, Russia and the United States, HORIZON tells the story of the discovery through the eyes and experiences of the two scientists. Like Laurel and Hardy, they swing from disappointment to despair, to euphoria, as they pursue their dramatic idea, working with geological evidence from the Turkish navy, drilling into the bed of the Black Sea alongside a team of Russian scientists (who were tracking fall-out from Chernobyl), building in all the data available from experts in climate and tree-ring dating, and finally testing their findings on their colleagues in the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, and at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. Bill Ryan and Walter Pitman may have a romantic streak in their natures, but there's nothing eccentric about their ideas. They are, says Professor Dewey, "Two of the finest American earth scientists working in the field". They have gathered a hoard of evidence to demonstrate that the Black Sea had fallen 120 metres below the level of the worlds oceans as a result of a sudden freezing of Northern Europe and Asia which dramatically reduced the flow of the great rivers which fed it. The Black Sea became a vast fresh-water lake. The Earth warmed, the oceans rose again and smashed through the Bosphorus Straits with the force of a hundred Niagara Falls, filling the Black Sea basin to its present level with the salt water of the oceans. he implications are enormous. Who lived by the Black Sea before the deluge? What may it tell us about the spread of Neolithic farming, culture and technology into Europe and beyond? Did this extraordinary event become the stuff of ancient storytelling, so that Noah and his Ark became a symbol for real people who were driven from their lands by a real flood?

Natural World 2007 10/11 - Rainforests for the Future

and hippos frolic in the surf. It's a good news/bad news storyline, though.
Yes, there are big national parks, but loggers, poachers and oil prospectors
are all after a piece of the jungle. Ranged against such forces, you wonder
how long a well-meaning president and a few ragged-trousered naturalists
can hold the line. Best book that holiday quick.

This World - Hunting for Hezbollah

NFO:
Hunting for Hezbollah
BBC 2 Thu 31 May, 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm 30mins

In his State of the Union address, George Bush said Hezbollah is one of the most
dangerous terrorist organisations in the world. So we've hit the ground in Beirut,
seeking out the Party of God. It's a year since the Iranian backed militants claimed
victory in a bloody 33 day conflict with Israel. This World investigates claims that
Hezbollah are back, more powerful than ever and readying themselves for another war.

Just after we arrived in Beirut, Hezbollah's Press Office put a blanket ban on all
filming activity. So this is the film they didn't want you to see.

Our guide through Hezbollah-land is Dawoud - a wisecracking former Shia militiaman
with all the right connections to the city's darkly vibrant underbelly. He's a
Hezbollah voter, but isn't officially a member of the organisation. Having lived 18
years in the US he understands the West, but in his heart he is a loyal Shia Muslim.
Dawoud is the perfect bridge between our world and theirs.

The Great Artists - Gustav Klimt - Cromwell Productions (2001) XviD

NFO:
DOCUMENTARY: The Great Artists - The Post-Impressionists - Gustav Klimt
Channel: Sky Arts
Date: Thursday 24th May 2007
Time: 01:00 to 01:50
Duration: 50 minutes.

Gustav Klimt.

Often called the pre-eminent exponent of Art Nouveau, Gustav Klimt began working as an artist/decorator before swapping staircases for the Vienna Secession.

Gustav Klimt was born in Austria in 1862. Despite early academic success and establishment recognition, Klimt was drawn to avant-garde art and was greatly influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Art Nouveau.

Official commissions were few and far between, but he was much in demand with private patrons, largely owing to his sought-after depictions of female beauty. His highly embellished, richly decorative patterns (as seen in works such as The Kiss and Judith) give his work the lush sensuality for which he is best remembered.

Horizon 2001 - Death Star

NFO:
BBC Two 9.00pm Thursday 18 October 2001
Out in deepest space lurks a force of almost unimaginable power. Explosions of extraordinary violence, are blasting through the Universe every day. If one ever struck our Solar System it would destroy our Sun and all the planets. For years no one could work out what was causing these awesome explosions. Now scientists think they have identified the culprit. It\'s the most extreme object ever found in the Universe; they have christened it a 'hypernova'. The mystery began in 1967. A US military satellite was launched to detect Soviet nuclear tests which the Pentagon believed were secretly taking place on the dark side of the Moon. Instead, the satellite picked up evidence of explosions far bigger than any bomb. Something was emitting bursts of gamma rays - the deadliest form of energy known - on a massive scale. What was worse, these blasts just kept on coming.
For decades scientists were baffled. Especially disturbing was evidence that these explosions might be coming from the furthest reaches of the Universe, billions of light years away. If this was so, then for us to see them on Earth they had to be on a scale that was beyond our comprehension. According to some, these explosions were so huge that they might even violate the most sacred law in all science: Einsteins famous equation relating mass and energy, E=mc. That law underpins nothing less than our understanding of how our Universe works. It was not until 1997, when a satellite pinpointed the exact location of these bursts, that scientists began to solve the puzzle. It seems these huge explosions are caused by the death throes of stars twenty times the size of our Sun, which burn themselves out and explode, creating hypernovae. What then unfolded was a chain of events, which would ultimately point towards some of the most exotic wonders in the Universe: stellar nurseries (where new stars are born) and black holes. Observations show that - instead of fading away, as an explosion might be expected to - radiation continues to emerge from the area of a hypernova. This ongoing emission is characteristic of the process of star birth. Astronomers conclude that the hypernova grows rapidly along with other normal stars in a nursery, but burns out when its contemporaries are still in their infancy. Find a hypernova, therefore, and you have also tracked down a part of space where stellar synthesis is underway. Which is why some scientists now believe that the huge explosions of hypernovae may be the key to unlocking one of the great unsolved mysteries in the Universe: how the first stars were made at the very dawn of time.

Natural World 2007 9/11 - Desert Lions

NFO:

There is something wonderfully uncomplicated and primeval about watching
a lion stalk its prey. The gentle padding towards the putative victims,
the careful and close watching, then the pounce. If you're at all upset
at watching all of this redness in tooth and claw, then you'd be well
advised to pop out for a biscuit as the sleek desert lions of Namib tear
into a docile herd of donkeys. The hapless beasts are sitting ducks. Or
sitting donkeys, indeed. Lions have only recently returned to the Namib
desert, to the joy of some, including conservationist Flip Stander, and
the consternation of others, notably the tribes who frequently have their
livestock ripped to shreds. But, as this excellent film shows, Stander
does his best to try to ensure that the two can co-exist as peacefully
as possible.
