Cuttlefish: The Brainy Bunch

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us
Cuttlefish might seem a better subject for Jamie's Kitchen - brushed with five-spice and served with a mango and coconut salad - than for a wildlife documentary, but the first few minutes of Cuttlefish: The Brainy Bunch quickly establish how fascinating the beasts can be, even if they haven't been brushed with five spice and served up with a mango and coconut salad.

Cuttlefish, we're told, are masters of disguise and, just like that, we see them underwater, changing colours and shape to blend in with surrounding coral and rocks. They are also relatively intelligent: their doughnut-shaped brains are proportionately the largest of the invertebrates and they are able to learn and remember tasks.

The gorgeous footage of the creatures in their underwater habitat makes this a soothing, quietly entertaining documentary.

Timewatch - The Hidden Children

Timewatch - The Hidden Children
BBC 2 Fri 27 Apr, 9:00 pm - 9:50 pm 50mins

By 1945 Vichy France had deported 76,000 Jews to Nazi concentration camps.

Told in their own words, these are the hair-raising stories of four children secretly
hidden by ordinary French people.

Today, they look like anyone's grandparents. But their stories are of narrow escapes,
incredible adventures, great heroism, and terrible loss.

Award-winning director Jonathan Hacker awakes powerful emotions as he accompanies these
survivors to the places where, 60 years ago, they played a deadly game of hide-and seek.

The Power of Nightmares

Part 1 - Baby It's Cold Outside

In the 1950s Sayyid Qutb, an Egyptian civil servant turned revolutionary, and Leo Strauss, a Jewish-American professor of political philosophy who fled Nazi persecution, were both in America at the same time. Qutb came to see Western liberalism as corrosive to morality and to society. Qutb had been sent to the U.S. to learn about its public education system but was disgusted by what he saw of its society. They each argued that radical measures (in Strauss's case, deception along the lines of the Plato's Noble Lie, and in Qutb's case, the creation of an Islamic state) could be justified in an effort to restore shared moral values to society, and their arguments heavily influenced American neo-conservatism and radical Islamism, respectively. Senior American civil servants and politicians influenced by neo-conservatism came to see communism as an evil force against which the U.S. should be presented as a force for good. This propaganda included Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney's formation of Team B, which over-estimated Soviet military technology, and the William Casey-led CIA assertion that various terrorist organisations were backed by the Soviet Union. The CIA's internal analysts (that Team B was arguing against), held that most terrorist groups were independent, in part because the book that laid out the theory of Soviet control of all terrorism, The Terror Network - The Secret War of International Terrorism (ISBN 0425053407), was full of lies the CIA had knowingly released as Black Propaganda. Meanwhile, Qutb became influential in the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and was then jailed after some of its members attempted to assassinate President Nasser.
This was first broadcast on Wednesday 20 October 2004. Its title is taken from a popular song which Qutb heard played at a church-organised dance for young people, which he saw as symptomatic of the immorality of American society.

Part 2 - The Phantom Victory

In the 1980s the Islamist mujaheddin and the neo-conservative-influenced Reagan administration temporarily cooperated in fighting a common enemy, the Soviet Union and the Soviet-backed regime in Afghanistan. Although the Soviet Union was already on the verge of collapse, both groups came to believe that it was their actions in Afghanistan that had caused it to fall. However, other attempts by Islamists to incite popular revolution failed, and the neo-conservatives lost power in the U.S. as the presidency passed to George H. W. Bush and subsequently to Bill Clinton. Both groups, having failed to achieve lasting political influence, identified new targets to attack: the neoconservatives sought to demonise Clinton while the radical Islamists decided that those who had not aided their cause were legitimate targets for violence.
This was first broadcast on Wednesday 27 October 2004.

Part 3 - The Shadows in the Cave

In the late 1990s the Taliban set up military training camps in Afghanistan for Islamist fighters. Most were only interested in fighting in their home countries, but Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri, leader of Egyptian Islamic Jihad and follower of Sayyid Qutb, paid the Taliban to allow them to recruit volunteers for attacks on the U.S. from these camps. Prosecutors for the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings believed bin Laden organised them and wanted to convict him in absentia by showing that he headed a criminal organisation. Jamal al-Fadl, a former associate of bin Laden, conveniently described just such an organisation to them, which the investigators called al-Qaeda. While bin Laden apparently aided the attacks he had no organisation through which he could command and control them; al-Fadl seems to have told investigators what they wanted to hear in return for money and witness protection. Similarly, while bin Laden provided funds and volunteers to carry out the September 11, 2001 attacks, they were actually planned by Khalid Shaikh Mohammed.

Following this attack, the neo-conservatives were able to convince George W. Bush to begin a War on Terror and to paint al-Qaeda as an international network of terrorists. The war in Afghanistan removed bin Laden's main source of recruits, but the U.S. military and the Afghan Northern Alliance also captured and killed many people in the Taliban camps that had nothing to do with him. The story circulated that bin Laden and the core of al-Qaeda had retreated to an underground complex in Tora Bora, but an exhaustive search revealed no sign of this. Al-Qaeda could not be found because it never really existed; Islamist terrorists are connected only by ideology and not by an organisation that can be cut off at its root.

The arrests of various groups of suspected terrorists in the U.S. following the September 11 attacks failed to find any substantive evidence, but did show a lot of imagination on the part of investigators. Many of those arrested in Afghanistan were captured and turned over to U.S. forces by the Northern Alliance, who claimed that their captives were Al-Qaeda members. The U.S. forces had nothing but the word of the Northern Alliance to tie the prisoners to Al-Qaeda. In addition, the Northern Alliance had motives to lie about any given captive's ties to terrorist organizations, since they received a monetary reward for every "terrorist" they handed over to the U.S. and could do away with virtually anybody they wanted to by bringing him to the Americans and labeling him a "terrorist." Nevertheless, the Alliance's claims were taken at face value and the captives imprisoned indefinitely in such places as Guantanamo Bay. Similarly, in the U.K., arrests under new terrorism laws have resulted in only 3 convictions of Islamists, all for fundraising. Much of the media coverage of potential terrorist attacks is also highly speculative and sensational. For instance, a terrorist attack using a radiological weapon, referred to by the media as a dirty bomb, wouldn't kill many people from fallout because the radioactive material would be spread thinly by any explosion. However, the neo-conservatives had found they could use the threat of Islamist terrorism, and the claimed possibility of sponsorship by Iraq, as an enemy against which to unite the U.S., and other politicians such as Tony Blair claimed an important role in protecting their countries from attack. Politicians and counter-terrorist agents have decided that they must be proactive in imagining the worst possible attacks and in stopping those who seem likely to carry out attacks.
This was first broadcast on Wednesday 3 November 2004. Its title appears to refer to Plato's allegory of the cave and to the belief in the complex in Tora Bora.

Horizon - Skyscraper Fire Fighters

NFO:
Horizon - Skyscraper Fire Fighters
BBC 2 Tue 24 Apr, 9:00 pm - 9:50 pm 50mins

A fire in a sky scraper is one of the greatest challenges known to fire crews. Predicting
how a fire is behaving in a tall building is almost impossible. And the decision to send
fire-fighters into these towering infernos can result in tragic consequences.

2001 saw the biggest fires in American history, in two of the tallest buildings in the
world. The fire-fighters who entered the Twin Towers on September 11th could only guess
at what was happening almost 1000 feet above them. That fateful day brought about the
death of 343 New York fire-fighters.

Jose Torero believes fire fighters need not be put in such danger and that new technology
could have saved many of the 343 fire fighters who died that day. He believes he could
even have saved the Twin Towers.

Professor Torero from the University of Edinburgh's Fire Safety Engineering Centre has
spent the last ten years developing a system that could change the way fires are fought
for ever. It's called Firegrid. It's a revolutionary approach to fire-fighting that could
save thousands of lives, giving man the upper hand on one of his oldest enemies.

Set against the heroism of the day, Horizon examines the remarkable vision of one man who
believes that the lessons of 9/11 have still not been learned, and that the safety of
skyscrapers around the world is still fundamentally at risk. We take his new system and
put it to the test. Some upsetting scenes.

The jungle is full of frightening creatures, but possibly the most unsettling of all is the African driver ant. This nasty, allconsuming insect may only be small, but when it moves in swarms of millions, virtually nothing can stand in its way.

It seems to be the violent chav of the natural world: it has an enormous head which contains a comparatively small brain - the rest of the space is occupied by huge muscles to operate its razorsharp jaws, which it uses like Stanley knives on anything that crosses its path.

This excellent documentary shows how an army of ants overpowers larger animals by ripping them to pieces. You wouldn't want these neighbours from hell in your patch of the jungle.

BBC Horizon - Tutankhamuns Fireball (2006)

Information
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us
Horizon: Tutunkhamun's Fireball, made by production company TV6, was
broadcast on BBC Two on Thursday, 20 July

In 1996 in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Italian mineralogist Vincenzo
de Michele spotted an unusual yellow-green gem in the middle of one of
Tutankhamun's necklaces.

The jewel was tested and found to be glass, but intriguingly it is older
than the earliest Egyptian civilisation.
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us
Working with Egyptian geologist Aly Barakat, they traced its origins to
unexplained chunks of glass found scattered in the sand in a remote
region of the Sahara Desert.

But the glass is itself a scientific enigma. How did it get to be there
and who or what made it?

The BBC Horizon programme has reported an extraordinary new theory
linking Tutankhamun's gem with a meteor.

Sky of fire

An Austrian astrochemist Christian Koeberl had established that the
glass had been formed at a temperature so hot that there could be only
one known cause: a meteorite impacting with Earth. And yet there were no
signs of a suitable impact crater, even in satellite images.

American geophysicist John Wasson is another scientist interested in the
origins of the glass. He suggested a solution that came directly from
the forests of Siberia.

"When the thought came to me that it required a hot sky, I thought
immediately of the Tunguska event," he told Horizon.

In 1908, a massive explosion flattened 80 million trees in Tunguska,
Siberia.

Although there was no sign of a meteorite impact, scientists now think
an extraterrestrial object of some kind must have exploded above
Tunguska. Wasson wondered if a similar aerial burst could have produced
enough heat to turn the ground to glass in the Egyptian desert.

Jupiter clue

The first atomic bomb detonation, at the Trinity site in New Mexico in
1945, created a thin layer of glass on the sand. But the area of glass
in the Egyptian desert is vastly bigger.

Whatever happened in Egypt must have been much more powerful than an
atomic bomb.

Dr Mark Boslough, Great Sand Sea (BBC)
Boslough's specialism is modelling large impacts

Impact simulation

A natural airburst of that magnitude was unheard of until, in 1994,
scientists watched as comet Shoemaker-Levy collided with Jupiter. It
exploded in the Jovian atmosphere, and the Hubble telescope recorded the
largest incandescent fireball ever witnessed rising over Jupiter's horizon.

Mark Boslough, who specialises in modelling large impacts on
supercomputers, created a simulation of a similar impact on Earth.

The simulation revealed that an impactor could indeed generate a
blistering atmospheric fireball, creating surface temperatures of
1,800C, and leaving behind a field of glass.

"What I want to emphasise is that it is hugely bigger in energy than the
atomic tests," said Boslough. "Ten thousand times more powerful."

Defence lessons

The more fragile the incoming object, the more likely these airborne
explosions are to happen.

In Southeast Asia, John Wasson has unearthed the remains of an event
800,000 years ago that was even more powerful and damaging than the one
in the Egyptian desert; one which produced multiple fireballs and left
glass over three hundred thousand square miles, with no sign of a crater.

"Within this region, certainly all of the humans would have been killed.
There would be no hope for anything to survive," he said.

Dr Aly Barakat with desert glass in hand (TV6/BBC)
Barakat holds up one of the many, huge chunks of glass in the desert

According to Boslough and Wasson, events similar to Tunguska could
happen as frequently as every 100 years, and the effect of even a small
airburst would be comparable to many Hiroshima bombs.

Attempting to blow up an incoming asteroid, Hollywood style, could well
make things worse by increasing the number of devastating airbursts.

"There are hundreds of times more of these smaller asteroids than there
are the big ones the astronomers track," said Mark Boslough. "There will
be another impact on the earth. It's just a matter of when."

Horizon - Moon for sale

NFO:
Horizon - Moon for sale
Tue 10 Apr, 9:00 pm - 9:50 pm 50mins

After 40 long years, man is preparing to return to the moon. Across the globe,
astronauts are gearing up for what has been dubbed the second moon race. But this
time the astronauts won't just land on the moon - they plan to stay there.

In this Horizon we meet some of the scientists and entrepreneurs who are ready to
exploit this much anticipated colonization of the moon.

From his office in Nevada, entrepreneur Dennis Hope has spawned a multi-million
dollar property business selling lunar real estate. It sounds far-fetched, but
according to Hope, nearly 4,000,000 people have already signed up - including
George Lucas, John Travolta, Tom Hanks and even George W Bush. Hope allocates
land by simply closing his eyes and pointing to a map of the moon 'It's not very
scientific, but it's kinda fun' he says. It's fun that has already made him $9
million.

But this is peanuts compared to what scientists believe is the real prize lying
in the moon rocks. Data collected from the Apollo moon landings have indicated
that large deposits of an extremely rare gas called Helium 3 are trapped in the
lunar soil.

Scientists believe that this Helium 3 could be used to create a new source of
almost inexhaustible, clean, pollution free energy on earth. It's a potential
that many scientists are keen to exploit and plans are already afoot to strip
mine the moon for Helium 3 and transport it the quarter of a million miles back
to earth. Whoever succeeds could solve the world's energy crisis - according to
Jerry Kulcinski from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Helium 3 may be the
Persian Gulf of the 21st Century.

But who will get to the moon first? And should they be exploiting the moon's
valuable resources at all?

Human v2.0.
Science documentary series. By 2029 it's predicted that computer intelligence will equal the power of the human brain. This idea is dividing the scientific community. For some it heralds endless possibilities - we will be able to download our minds onto computers extending our lives indefinitely. Others fear it will lead to the destruction of the human race by giving rise to ultra intelligent machines. One thing they all agree on is that the creation of this new type of human is inevitable.

18 with a Bullet
Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at 9 P.M.

In San Salvador, El Salvador, two thousand miles from Los Angeles's 18th Street, a gang known as "18" governs its territory like an armed militia. In the mid 1990s, thousands of Salvadoran nationals living illegally in the U.S. were deported to their homeland. Some brought L.A. gang culture back with them to a country beset by poverty and awash in arms. Organizing support for gang members in need, meting out justice to those who would defy the gang's code and waging an endless vendetta against its enemies, 18 is helping to make El Salvador one of the most violent and crime-ridden countries in the world. "18 with a Bullet" presents a chilling portrait of six months in the life of this notorious Central American gang.

BBC Horizon - Battle of the Brains

NFO:
BBC 2 Tue 17 Apr, 9:00 pm - 9:50 pm 50mins

Can you think of 100 different uses for a sock? How would you cope with glasses that turn everything upside down? What's your emotional intelligence? Can you create a work of art in 10 minutes?

Horizon takes seven people who are some of the highest flyers in their field: a musical prodigy, a quantum physicist, an artist, a dramatist, an RAF fighter pilot, a chess grandmaster and a Wall Street trader, and puts them through a battery of tests to measure their intelligence. Who is the most intelligent?

The principle way that we measure intelligence, the IQ test, is based on research done before even Einstein was in his prime. Because these tests label us with a single number they are still a popular and convenient way to divide people into clever clogs and dunces. But most psychologists agree that they only tell half the story, at most. Where they disagree is how we measure intelligence, for the very good reason that they still don't know exactly what it is.

Horizon looks for evidence of intelligence in the brain, in our genes and in our upbringing and tests some of the latest theories using them to see which of the seven has the highest intelligence. Wall Street Trader, Nathan Hasselbauer has an IQ of 167, but is he creative? Artist Stella Vine left school at 13 how would she know the distance from London to Hong Kong? Dramatist and critic Bonnie Greer has got a great vocabulary, but what's she like at inductive logic?

BBC Horizon 2006 - A War on Science

NFO:

The theory of evolution is under attack from a controversial new idea called intelligent design. But is it science? When Charles Darwin published his theory of evolution nearly 150 years ago, he shattered the dominant belief of his day that humans were the product of divine creation. Through his observations of nature, Darwin proposed the theory of evolution by natural selection. This caused uproar. After all, if the story of creation could be doubted, so too could the existence of the creator. Ever since its proposal, this cornerstone of biology has sustained wave after wave of attack. Now some scientists fear it is facing the most formidable challenge yet: a controversial new theory called intelligent design.

In the late 1980s Phillip Johnson, a renowned lawyer and born-again Christian, began to develop a strategy to challenge Darwin. To Johnson, the evidence for natural selection was poor. He also believed that by explaining the world only through material processes was inherently atheistic. If there was a god, science would never be able to discover it.

Johnson recruited other Darwin doubters, including biochemist Professor Michael Behe, mathematician Dr William Dembski, and philosopher of science Dr Stephen Meyer. These scientists developed the theory of intelligent design (ID) which claims that certain features of the natural world are best explained as the result of an intelligent being. To him, the presence of miniature machines and digital information found in living cells are evidence of a supernatural creator.
Throughout the 90s, the ID movement took to disseminating articles, books and DVDs and organising conferences all over the world.

To its supporters, intelligent design heralds a revolution in science and the movement is fast gaining political clout. Not only does it have the support of the President of the United States, it is on the verge of being introduced to science classes across the nation. However, its many critics, including Professor Richard Dawkins and Sir David Attenborough, fear that it cloaks a religious motive to replace science with god.
Throughout the 20th century Christian groups resisted the theory of evolution. Many US states did not teach it until 1968 when the Supreme Court ruled that banning the teaching of evolution contravened the first amendment of the constitution of America, the separation of church and state. It was however still legal to teach religion as part of science class until the Edwards vs. Aguillard case in 1987, where mentioning a theory called 'creation science' in biology lessons was also deemed unconstitutional. This left evolution as the only theory of biological origin that science teachers were allowed to teach.

In 2005, the school board of Dover, a small farming community in western Pennsylvania, became the first in America to adopt the theory of intelligent design. The move divided the community and the small town became the centre of national attention. The school board voted to teach the ninth grade biology class that there are gaps and problems with the theory of evolution and to present intelligent design as an alternative. Dover science teacher Bryan Rehm and his wife Christy believed that this new policy was not only anti-science, but religious and therefore unconstitutional.
By promoting religion it was a violation of the law passed in 1987. The Rehms and nine other parents and teachers filed a law suit against the school board. Neighbour was pitted against neighbour in the first legal challenge to intelligent design.

After 40 days of trial, Judge John E Jones III ruled against the school board, stating: "We have addressed the seminal question of whether ID is science. We have concluded that it is not, and moreover that ID cannot uncouple itself from its creationist, and thus religious, antecedents."

Evolution supporters heralded this victory as the damning blow to the intelligent design movement. However, as history shows, law suits have little effect on the support for creationism in a country where over 50% of citizens believe that God created humans in their present form, the way the bible describes it.*

Globalisation is Good

NFO:
The world is an unequal and unjust place, in which some are born into wealth and some into
hunger and misery. To explore why, in this controversial Channel Four documentary the young
Swedish writer Johan Norberg takes the viewers on a journey to Taiwan, Vietnam, Kenya and
Brussels to see the impact of globalisation, and the consequences of its absence. It makes
the case that the problem in the world is not too much capitalism, globalisation and
multinationals, but too little.

Does globalisation create a race to the bottom - or to the top?

"Globalisation is good" tells a tale of two countries that were equally poor 50 years ago
- Taiwan and Kenya. Today Taiwan is 20 times richer than Kenya. We meet the farmers and
entrepreneurs that could develop Taiwan because it introduced a market economy and integrated
into global trade. And we meet the Kenyan farmers and slum dwellers that are still
desperately poor, because Kenya shut its door to globalisation. The Kenyans are suffering
from regulations, corruption and the lack of property rights. The unequal distribution in the
world is a result of the unequal distribution of capitalism - those who have capitalism grow
rich, those who don't stay poor.

Is Nike exploiting workers in poor countries? The film also explores the role of
multinational corporations, especially the most criticised - Nike. In Vietnam we see that
Nike's so called sweatshops give the Vietnamese better working conditions and many times the
wages they would have otherwise. Instead of hurting the country, Nike contributes to rapid
growth, poverty reduction and less child labour. Domestic factory owners visit Nike to get
ideas on how to improve productivity and working conditions. If that is exploitation, then
the problem in the world is that the poor are not sufficiently exploited.

The film concludes that we must fight for more globalisation if we want to help the poor
countries. EU-protectionism is the worst obstacle today. We spend so much on agricultural
protectionism that each of our 20 million cows could fly round the world once every year.
The problem is not that we in the West are trying to trick poor countries into global
capitalism. The problem is we are shutting them out from it. Therefore, the anti-globalisation
movement is ignorant and dangerous. Far from protecting poor people the movement is
inadvertently helping to keep them poor.

Horizon - The Blind Watchmaker (1987)

NFO:
Horizon - The Blind Watchmaker (1987) - winner of Sci-Tech Prize for the best science programme of 1987.
Another Richard Dawkins presentation based on one of his books (which won the Royal Society of Literature Award). In the programme, he refutes the claims of creationists that Darwinism cannot be credible because blind chance alone would not produce the complexity of organisms as they exist. "The Blind Watchmaker" creationist argument was coined by Rev. William Paley (1743-1805) 50 years before Darwin's theory of evolution.

Dawkins demonstrates how the eye could have evolved in stages, each simple and a result of random variation, but connected by a natural selection of those organisms which become more successful. In the early stages even with an incomplete eye, the benefit of even partial vision discriminating only between light and dark would be more useful than no vision. The structure of the surface of the "new" (in 1987) optical storage disc is related to the structure of the eye of the moth. A computer program produces generations of biomorphs using incremental random variation.
See http://www.rennard.org/alife/english/biomintrgb.html for an applet

Engineers apply the principles of evolutionary variation, for example in a windmill that uses stationary vanes of suitable design to concentration even gentle wind onto a smaller central rotor that turns more powerfully as a result.
