Images of the Cosmos - Mapping the Milky Way
NFO:
A study of how revolutions in Astronomy have enabled Astronomers to more accurately map our Galaxy & beyond.
This is part of the superb series of "Images of the Cosmos" Astronomy programmes. In this one we look at how fundamental new discoveries in Astronomy helped map our surrounding region of space and far into the depths of intergalactic space. We cover some of the greats Messier, the Earl of Ross, Hubble, Jansky, Oort, & Van De hulst who have all contributed to the fast evolving new methods used to measure extraordianary distances. These methods are covered in-depth ranging from Hubbles revolution in the scale of the universe using Cepheid variable stars to the 21cm Hydrogen emission line to infrared and visible light discoveries aided by satellites such as Hiparcos.
Highly recommended for fans of the Sky at Night or even just those after some hard science.
