Hunters and Hunted. Episode 7.
The nature documentary explores mammals' ability to learn new survival tricks. In a TV first, a killer whale is shown sneaking into a pool where elephant seal pups learn to swim, saving itself the trouble of hunting in the open sea. Slow-motion cameras reveal how the star-nosed mole can smell prey underwater; young ibex run up an almost vertical cliff face to escape a fox; and young stoats fight mock battles, learning the skills that make them one of the world's most efficient predators.

Berlin ep02

NFO:
Berlin ep02 Ruined Visions.WnA
Sat 21 Nov 2009 19:45 BBC Two

The story of Berlin and its buildings is one of visionary creation and terrible
destruction, of human ambition and delusion. From the 19th-century architect
Karl Friedrich Schinkel to the Bauhaus pioneers of Modernism and the rebuilding
of the city after the fall of the Wall, it is a city that has always looked to
the future.

Architect Albert Speer had grand plans to transform Berlin into a monumental
Nazi capital for Adolf Hitler, and the buildings that remain from his scheme
are still haunted by their terrible associations.

There is no other city in the world where the morality of the architecture has
been so heavily scrutinized. Buildings with Imperial, Nazi and Communist pasts
all inspire fierce debates about whether this city should acknowledge or deny
its chequered history.

Wed 18 Nov 2009 19:30 BBC One

Farmer Jimmy Doherty is trying to discover what really goes into supermarket
food. To find out, he goes back to basics and sets up his own food factory in a
barn.

In this programme Jimmy investigates the science behind our favourite snack
foods. Can you describe the flavour of fizzy cola? Experts say cola's flavour
includes lavender and coriander as well as orange, lime and lemon. After a
supermarket taste test, Jimmy attempts to mix his own cola syrup and inject
some fizz. He also tries to work out how to make potato into hoops, twirls and
other shaped snacks.

Jimmy's snack food production line consists of drainpipe, a hand-mincer and a
water cooler bottle. How will they help him reveal the secrets behind our
favourite snack foods?

Jimmy visits the biggest ice cream factory in the world in his quest to
discover the secret ingredient that makes ice cream the only food we can eat
straight from the freezer. He also visits one of the world's biggest crisp
factories to discover why the perfect crunch makes eating crisps so enjoyable.

Ugly Beauty

NFO:
Ugly Beauty.WnA
Sat 21 Nov 2009 20:45 BBC Two

Has beauty disappeared from modern art? Several influential modern thinkers
insist that it has. And this belief has inspired them to publish a clutch of
recent books which claim that modern art is no longer capable of capturing true
beauty: that beauty has gone from art.

Art critic Waldemar Januszczak fiercely disagrees, believing that great art is
as interested in beauty as ever.

Art's search for beauty has manifested itself in depictions of the idealised
female form, glorious landscapes, lovely flower studies and perfectly arranged
renaissance altar pieces - but where does this search continue today?

We know so much about the atomical make-up of our universe that the search for
beauty can seem old-fashioned or unscientific. And because so much horror and
darkness have passed through modern times, the quest for 'beauty' can even be
dismissed as escapist and irrelevant.

But of course, it isn't. Waldemar Januszczak would argue that the need for
transcendent beauty in art is greater than it has ever been. And - most
importantly - art knows this. Beauty is out there. You just have to know where
to find it.

However, beauty today can be electronic or scientific; subtle and elusive. It
can be found in the LCD sculptures of Tatsuo Miyajima or the subtle light
installations of James Turrell. Carl Andre discovers a stern modern beauty in
squares of industrial materials dropped around a goods yard. The cancer
paintings of Damien Hirst find a terrible modern beauty in the deformed human
anatomy. These and other great searchers after beauty are the subject of this
film.

The world today needs beauty more than it has ever needed it - and modern art
is one of its few suppliers.

Hot Cities ep05

NFO:
Hot Cities ep05 Feed The World.WnA
BBC World 08:10 21/11/09

Hot Cities
Feed the World. Series investigating the challenge of adapting and surviving in
an urban world, threatened by climate change. This week, food shortage in
Senegal

Many of the world’s biggest cities are increasingly threatened by climate
change. If it continues unchecked, millions will be left homeless, starving and
with little water.

Hot Cities travels the world from Lagos to Los Angeles, from Shanghai to Surat,
from Dhaka to Durban to analyse one of the significant threats facing the
planet.

Talking to the experts, the politicians and some of the millions of new
migrants to the world’s biggest cities, the series assesses not just the threat
from climate change but our response.

In 2008 the world reached an important milestone when, for the first time in
history, more people lived in cities than the countryside. Homo sapiens had
become homo urbanus.

All this has led to a vicious circle. Cities are one of the big drivers of
climate change. As cities get even bigger, they drive climate change even
harder. And that makes many of these massive urban areas more vulnerable to
rising sea levels, violent storms and dramatic changes in temperature.

In December the most important climate change conference in over a decade will
be held in Copenhagen. That is where world leaders and their advisors must
hammer out a blueprint for survival. Hot Cities shows how important their
decisions will be.

Episode Five: Feed the World

Half the world’s population face severe food shortages by the end of the
century as climate change takes its toll on the global harvest. It has become
so desperate in some countries riots have broken out in protest at the lack of
food.

Senegal is one of them, a country where one of the government’s biggest
challenges is making sure there is enough food to go round.

Drought in the Sahal, which runs through Senegal, means many climate migrants
are flocking to the capital, Dakar, to find work to feed their families.

Hot Cities follows migrants from their villages, where farming has almost been
wiped out, to the city. Feed the World also looks at what is being done to feed
Senegal in the future.

Wed 11 Nov 2009 19:30 BBC One

The entertaining science series in which farmer Jimmy Doherty tries to discover
what really goes into supermarket food. To find out, he goes back to basics and
sets up his own food factory in a barn.

In this programme Jimmy tries to copy some of the methods food companies use to
preserve food to make it safe to eat weeks, months or even years after it is
produced. Why do peas have to be frozen within hours of picking and why is
factory freezing quicker than home freezing? Jimmy also attempts to suck all
the water out of strawberries so they can be added to a box of breakfast
cereal.

Jimmy copies the factory preserving processes using a leaf blower, a vacuum
cleaner, two dog bowls, and the flexible hose from an extractor fan.

Jimmy also investigates what is done to chilled ready meals to make them safe
to eat after a week, and is surprised to discover that the answer is not
artificial preservatives but clever use of heat. He also goes inside the
world's biggest baked beans factory to discover how they make canned food safe
to store in our cupboards for months and even years.

Alan Davies attempts to answer the proverbial question: how long is a piece of
string? But what appears to be a simple task soon turns into a mind-bending
voyage of discovery where nothing is as it seems.

An encounter with leading mathematician Marcus du Sautoy reveals that Alan's
short length of string may in fact be infinitely long. When Alan attempts to
measure his string at the atomic scale, events take an even stranger turn. Not
only do objects appear in many places at once, but reality itself seems to be
an illusion.

Ultimately, Alan finds that measuring his piece of string could - in theory at
least - create a black hole, bringing about the end of the world.

The Art on Your Wall with Sue Perkins

The Art On Your Wall With Sue Perkins
Monday 16 November
9.00-10.00pm BBC TWO

In recent years, Britain has seen a rise in affordable art, mass-market
masterpieces. This trend has facilitated a change in taste of domestic art, but
why is the art we hang in our homes so different from the kind of art we expect
to see in a gallery?

In The Art On Your Wall, part of the Modern Beauty Season on BBC Two and BBC
Four, comedienne Sue Perkins aims to discover just what the average British
person displays above their mantelpiece. Some of these iconic images are
reproductions of famous artists, while some are unknowns, but Sue tracks down
the artists behind the most popular prints to find out what has influenced
their work.

Sue discusses Tretchikoff – the seminal Sixties print artist – with Red Or Dead
founder and print collector Wayne Hemingway. She meets Scottish
miner-turned-millionaire painter Jack Vettriano and tracks down best-selling
print photographer, and creator of Ullswater, Mel Allen.

Sue also chats to Spencer Rowell, the photographer behind Athena's Man And Baby
print, before heading to Cornwall to get to the bottom of the two
million-selling Tennis Girl print, by meeting its flamboyant creator, Martin
Elliot. Finally, she meets Sam Toft, creator of Mr Mustard, the quirky figure
featured in a series of best-selling prints.

This is the story of the images that changed these artists' lives as well as
Britain's walls.

In the third episode of Jimmy's quest to uncover the secrets lurking in the
contents of the supermarket trolley, he finds out why there isn't a creamy
layer at the top of the milk any more.

He attempts to replicate the modern dairy process using a DIY production line
set up in a barn. He uses clever chemistry to make his own version of
supermarket spread and follows the egg's journey from hen to supermarket. He is
surprised to see some of the imperfect wrinkly eggs that never make it onto the
shelves. At the cheese factory, he helps make Red Leicester cheese and learns
that this is one factory where they actually put bacteria into the food.

Insects. Episode 6.
The nature documentary looks at insects, the most successful animal group ever. There are 200 million insects for each of us. Darwin's stag beetle fights in the tree tops with huge curved jaws, the camera flies with millions of monarch butterflies, and super-slow motion shows a bombardier beetle firing boiling liquid at enemies through a rotating nozzle. Also a honey bee army stings a raiding bear into submission and grass cutter ants march like a Roman army, harvesting grass they cannot eat.

Berlin ep01

NFO:
Berlin ep01 Dangerous Ideas.WnA
Sat 14 Nov 2009 19:30 BBC Two

The story of Berlin is one of a clash of ideas that would shape the modern
world.

The 18th-century king Frederick the Great was a contradictory character whose
legacy would define Berlin as a place of both aggressive militarism and
enlightened idealism. He would be embraced as an icon by Hitler and, later, the
Communist leaders in East Berlin. But Frederick's liberalism created a city in
which new theories of sex and sexuality could flourish, inspiring
groundbreaking art.

During the Cold War, the street that bore the king's name, Friedrichstrasse,
was also brutally divided - and irreconcilable. Only after the Berlin Wall fell
in 1989 was King Frederick returned to his desired resting place. The funeral
was intended as a laying-to-rest of more than just a body.

Hot Cities ep04

NFO:
Hot Cities ep04 Meltdown.WnA
BBC World Saturday 14th November at 0810 GMT

Hot Cities
Series investigating the challenge of adapting and surviving in an
urban world, threatened by climate change. This week, water security in Peru.

Episode Four: Meltdown

Water security is going to be one of the most pressing issues as the world
faces the challenge of climate change. If average global temperatures rise by
only a few degrees most of the world’s glaciers will all but disappear, leading
to floods and severe water shortages for millions of people.Lima, Peru.

Hot Cities goes to Lima in Peru, one of the driest cities in the world which
relies heavily on the water from three rivers fed by glacial melt.

As the city swells in size the demands on the water supply will only increase.
But already Lima is working on a survival strategy based on re-cycling projects
and something called fog-catching, literally catching fog in large thin-meshed
nets and using the moisture to irrigate plants.
